The Mindful Mathematician

Sunday, February 15, 2015. I must ask. Why must you tell? Approximately 2 times a week we have visitors in my 3rd grade classroom. Other teachers come in to watch us do math and after my lesson with 3rd graders, I have the privilege to debrief with my colleagues and share some thoughts about what I'm learning from my 3rd graders. This year has been an amazing journey, and I have learned so much from both my students and my peer observers. I mean they teach each other, right? Can you repeat what she said?

The Mindful Mathematician: April 2014

http://themindfulmathematician.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Friday, April 18, 2014. Common Core or Common Sense? As I was trolling my facebook page one evening this week, I happened upon a post by one of the second grade teachers that I work with in my district. She was expressing her frustrations with all the negativity surrounding the Common Core and gave a fabulous example of something that happened in her classroom which she attributes to the Common Core. I just had to share:. The following is an example of Common Sense in my classroom. CCSS 2 .OA. Im crazy b...

The Mindful Mathematician: September 2014

Sunday, September 14, 2014. Rounding in a Round About Way. Have you ever seen an assessment item like this one? I have. As a matter of fact there is a similar question on my district's third grade unit 1 assessment. The expectation is that the student's would read the word "about" (which has been bolded, italicized, and underlined for emphasis) and they would then know that they should not perform exact arithmetic on this problem, but instead round first, then add. Why? I don't. Hear me out. Written by t...

The Mindful Mathematician: November 2014

Saturday, November 8, 2014. Everything is Awesome Arithmetic Activities. Here's what's holding me back. I'm addicted to watching my students work. No matter what I come up with for independent work time, I can't keep myself from stopping to watch them work. Therefore, I can never get to my table to call a small group over to work with me. Nevertheless, I decided to give it a go. I put together eight "Awesome Arithmetic Activities" that my students can work on independently. 8) Ways to make a number.

Thursday, October 2, 2014. Lights Camera Action: 3-Act Tasks. Ask yourself, what problem have you solved ever, that was worth solving, where you knew all of the needed information in advance? Where you didn't have a surplus of information and you had to filter it out, or you didn't have insufficient information and you had to go find some." Dan Meyer. What is a 3-Act Task you ask? Maybe I can help. I'll take you through the one I did this week in my class. Day 1 Act 1:. It all began with this 30-second v...

The Mindful Mathematician: March 2014

http://themindfulmathematician.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 24, 2014. A Letter to Frustrated Parents of Common Core Math Students. Dear frustrated parents of Common Core math students,. Think back to your math education, did you learn the steps required to add numbers? Did you learn another set of steps for how to add and subtract fractions? How about a procedure for how to add and subtract negative numbers? Were each one of those procedures different and specific to the "type" of number you were adding or subtracting? What about as you got older?

The Mindful Mama | A journey from chaos to mindfulness…hopefully

A journey from chaos to mindfulness…hopefully. Going with the flow. I began this blog to chronicle the ups and down of my recovery from depression. I haven’t had that many downs and when I did have them, I didn’t talk about them. But mostly things have just been going well. So, it’s time to refocus. My goal now will be to move out of mindlessness in more every day situations to allow this whole way of thinking more completely envelope me. What do you think I should focus on? So it’s been a while! Some th...
