Who is Yaya? | Writing From Merida
http://writingfrommerida.com/2015/08/09/who-is-yaya
MEXICAN CUSTOMS and CULTURE. August 9, 2015. Yaya has lived in the streets of Merida since the early 1980s. The radius of her world is one square block between Calles 57 and 59, 58 and 60. She is about 4 foot 6, bowlegged, toothless and scruffy. She does not speak or hear. I am not a psychiatrist, but I would guess that she is schizophrenic. The government has tried to assist Yaya, as have groups of religious women but it’s been a no-go. Yaya has chosen her life and will not consider any other. I’v...

MEXICAN CUSTOMS and CULTURE. Tag Archives: Outdoor markets. August 12, 2015. Letter writing back and forth with my mother, other family and friends in Canada was my only contact with the life I’d previously known. Jorge and I did not even own a phone until 1980, but every year on my birthday, my family would call me at the house of my parents-in-law. A 12 minute call cost $100.00 a princely sum back then. In the late 1980s when Merida was discovered , most of the new arrivals from the USA and Canada want...

MEXICAN CUSTOMS and CULTURE. Tag Archives: Joanna’s Books. January 15, 2014. Get Joanna’s latest novel: The Woman Who Wanted the Moon. The story spans two decades: 1968 1988, a period of great socio-political upheaval in Mexico. It unfolds after the summer of 1968 when university students took to the streets of Mexico City. Waving placards and banners, they called for change. They wanted their voices to be heard. The personal, professional and political challenges the couple encounter over the ensuing 20...

Los Colores de Mérida ...adventure and a new freedom in Yucatán: October 2012
http://coloresdemerida.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
Los Colores de Mérida .adventure and a new freedom in Yucatán. Monday, October 15, 2012. Now, remember how Alan and I (well. mostly I) have anguished over how we will get ourselves and our animals to Mérida? Within a few months after we arrive in Mérida, the vehicle will be 10 years old and, if we were told correctly by Girl Friday, we should be able to nationalize it with our FM3's. If anyone can verify this, we would appreciate a comment. Other's have said we need the FM2. Links to this post.

Wednesday, July 30, 2014. A SIMPLE Task - Installing a Doorbell in Mexico. When I first moved into this house fourteen years ago, there was a doorbell with a wire that went to the button on the outside wall of the house. It died long ago. After it died, I would have to drive to Home Depot in either Queretaro or Celaya to get a new wireless bell. I couldn't fix the answering machine. I bought a new door bell battery and thought I had fixed the doorbell. If I pushed the button while it was still in the hou...

The Mérida Initiative: January 2014
http://themeridainitiative.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
160;The Mérida Initiative. Wednesday, January 1, 2014. Do you recognize me? I was doing some cleaning, on my last night of our recent stay in Mérida, and there it was: clinging to the wall just inside the patio door. I did a bit of poking around online and found this reference to a Tailless Mexican Whip Scorpion. Or just the Tailless Whip Scorpion. My little visitor looks like it could be an immature specimen - the other ones I found look less translucent, with more serious-looking pincers. Wild Neighbor...

160;The Mérida Initiative. Monday, April 15, 2013. The season of packing and moving and storing and waiting continues. I'm behind in my blogging, with various things going on at once. I'll try to catch up, one topic at a time. Tonight's topic (linked below) is letting go of stuff - I've attempted to link it here from my other neglected blog about our Victoria renovations. Hope it works! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The fox is loose in the henhouse. Mexpatriate - in the key of steve. To air is human.

160;The Mérida Initiative. Wednesday, March 13, 2013. Had a week of vacation time to burn off before the end of March, and we entertained the thought we might actually get away to Mérida for a break. Instead, it has turned out to be a working vacation. We're packing up and emptying our overstuffed house for the renovation that's actually going to start next week. The most important thing, perhaps, is the dogs like it. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The fox is loose in the henhouse. From ...

Writing From Joy | Playing with Words and Food
Playing with Words and Food. The Best Pumpkin Patch. 3 November, 2016. Since few people stop by the pumpkin patch after October, I needed to make an appointment to come on November 2nd. My kids ran around the pumpkin playground while I quizzed the cucurbita ambassador (yes, cucurbita. Is the Latin name for the squash family and yes, if “cucurbita ambassador” is a real title, I want it) about the taste and texture of the dozens of squash they had grown that year. The pumpkin lady gave us a great deal.

Writing From Live Art. A Live Art Uk initiative. Saturday, 17 March 2007. Rachel Lois- Curious, '(Be) Longing. 10.02.07. Written and performed by Leslie Hill and Helen Paris.
