The Digital Woodworker | Wood Zealot's Workshop

http://www.woodzealot.com/category/the-digital-woodworker

Wood Zealot's Workshop. I'm happy to see you… but honestly that IS a try square in my pocket! Archive for the ‘The Digital Woodworker’ Category. Check Out My Sexy Chest. December 10th, 2010. Inspiration. We all want it. Getting it is the challenging part. I’ve checked with my local Walmart and they do not sell it (I’m sure if they did there would be an extended warranty option… never get the extended warranty! This is where things gets cool (and the world said with one breath “finally”). The chest featur...

Wood Zealot's Workshop. I'm happy to see you… but honestly that IS a try square in my pocket! Life as it Pertains to Me. Bending Over: The Untold Story…. Bending Over: The Untold Story…. January 14th, 2011. Would the shop vac break me? Spoiler alert: yes and a little ). I’m sure there are others out there like me… When faced with a bending over proposition such as picking up dropped money, petting a beloved animal, or washing our feet, we pause to perform the cost/benefit analysis. I’m not dating at the ...

Wood Zealot's Workshop. I'm happy to see you… but honestly that IS a try square in my pocket! Are you an idiot? Necessity out, stupidity in, as mother of invention. Necessity out, stupidity in, as mother of invention. April 7th, 2009. Moments later, via assistance of a forstner bit, magnets, and CA glue the job was completed with minimal casualties. I quickly put the fixture up, flip the switch while exclaiming “let there be light! Before taking the, at this point,. Hanging my beans with bacon. I believe...

You know that unmistakable feeling you get when you see something and your gut tells you that you need to sit on it? We’ve all been there and it just happened to me once again. In today’s design-inspiring link we look at a chair that your derriere would be so lucky to grace. Made from super fine kerf cuts on his Bridge City Tool Works Jointmaker Pro.

Wood Zealot's Workshop. I'm happy to see you… but honestly that IS a try square in my pocket! Life as it Pertains to Me. May 11th, 2011. Excuse me… sorry, but the dust on this blog is thick. Not wood dust unfortunately, but the normal kind of dust (i.e. mostly Soylent Green). I made some boxes. Lots of figure in these materials. Lots of tear-out to deal with. More on that battle in a future post. Apparently I did some crack and then made miter keys. While I was never in the boy scouts, I do believe i...

Scott's Amateur WoodShop: December 2014

http://s-a-w-s.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Monday, December 22, 2014. Toy chest, mid build. The lid breaks into 3', 2', and 3' sections. The only part of the project you could call "joinery". Fun to slap together, though. If you build this, have some rope on hand. PS A note on safety: Plywood chest lids can be a danger to small fingers and heads. If you build this project, you may want to look into hinges designed for this problem, or be extra watchful. Thursday, December 4, 2014. My immediate goal is to get that number under 10. After that I ...

Scott's Amateur WoodShop: File handles from a bare-bones lathe

http://s-a-w-s.blogspot.com/2014/02/file-handles-from-bare-bones-lathe.html

Wednesday, February 5, 2014. File handles from a bare-bones lathe. These are a couple of file handles I turned from cocobolo scraps the other day. I needed some for a set of saw files and wanted something smaller than typical so they could fit in the tool roll. Also, if you have a lathe, it seems silly to buy something this simple. While I've got saw filing on the brain, I'll just mention that my first impression of the gramercy saw vise that just arrived is very positive. The only two previous occas...

Scott's Amateur WoodShop: April 2014

http://s-a-w-s.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Friday, April 4, 2014. Splitting oak, day 2. Last night I showed up with another friend to help, and some additonal tools. We got it down to a science, finally. Warning, one of these photos is intentionally misleading. Splitting something this thick is quite different that splitting firewood, I think mostly because it cannot deflect away from the wedge nearly as much. Here's the recipe that worked for us:. 1 score the line with a machete, lightly tapped with a dead-blow mallet. 5 add more wedges. My cous...

Scott's Amateur WoodShop: extrapolating myself into unknown territory

http://s-a-w-s.blogspot.com/2015/06/extrapolating-myself-into-unknown.html

Saturday, June 20, 2015. Extrapolating myself into unknown territory. Today I'm drawboring some breadboard ends on a bar top. I've drawbored before (once), and I know I need slots to allow the wood to move, so the logical conclusion is a slot that is offset from a hole. See how the hole doesn't quite line up? That's the key to drawboring. I think it's going to work, but I've never actually seen these two combined. I'm going with a very small offset just to be safe. June 21, 2015 at 1:17 PM. This experime...

Scott's Amateur WoodShop: I am coming around to purpleheart.

http://s-a-w-s.blogspot.com/2015/06/i-am-coming-around-to-purpleheart.html

Tuesday, June 23, 2015. I am coming around to purpleheart. I've been working with purpleheart lately for this bar. I'm building with some friends, and I have to admit I haven't cared for the stuff much up until now. It's heavy, eats steel, and it really likes to stab me with brittle needle-y splinters. It looks like the finish is already starting to dry in this photo I took 1 minute after wiping it on. That's probably a good sign. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). I am coming around to purpleheart.

Sunday, April 26, 2015. 500 or so of french cleats, cut this morning. Links to this post. Tuesday, April 21, 2015. It's official, I am going to Handworks. I'm excited to be able to get hands-on time with a bunch of tools that are otherwise difficult to get a feel for. If my experience at WIA. Last year is any indication (why didn't I write about that here? Then I'm even more excited to rub shoulders with fellow woodworkers. I'm sure I'll learn things that I don't expect. I hope to see you there! Travel t...

Thanks to Charlotte, Frank, Patty, D, and Abby for all your help, and thanks to all my camp-mates for your encouragement and ideas to make this project a reality. And thanks to my friends Matt and Samuel for helping with these photos on short notice. Legs, ready to be unfolded. The legs open in pairs. Lock the brass leg braces with a small push.

Scott's Amateur WoodShop: Tool Chest!

http://s-a-w-s.blogspot.com/2015/05/tool-chest.html

Wednesday, May 13, 2015. I declare this thing done. What I really like about the book (and the Schwarz's writing in general), is that he lays out the principles he's following instead of encouraging you to slavishly copy the details. The first rule (not technically a rule) of the ATC is that you're supposed to disobey Chris Schwarz, and I did plenty of that. I am incapable of painting over this surface. The first thing you might notice is that my tool chest is not painted black. Why not? The chisels don'...

Scott's Amateur WoodShop: drawbored breadboard ends, step-by-step

http://s-a-w-s.blogspot.com/2015/06/drawbored-breadboard-ends-step-by-step.html

Sunday, June 21, 2015. Drawbored breadboard ends, step-by-step. If you saw my earlier post, " extrapolating myself into unknown territory. You might be curious if my experiment with drawbored breadboard ends actually worked out. So far, it seems to have. If it explodes in the future, I'll mention it here. I photographed to entire process to share. More info about this project is available by using the " purple bar. First, I tap the breadboard end in place. Drilling holes, following the new marks.
