Veering Through Vietnam

Saturday, July 08, 2006. And now, the end is here, it's time to face the final curtain. Ottawa, July 7. Here I sit at my mother's computer, back in the order, quiet and expensive surroundings of Canada's capital (and my birthplace, almost 38 years ago). contemplating the fact that my bike trip is now well and truly over. The past few weeks have been a very different experience from the rest of the bike trip, an uneventful but relaxing addendum spent mostly on beaches and in buses. Is good fuel for cycling.

Veering Through Vietnam: Random Musings, Vignettes and Thoughts

http://vietnamveering.blogspot.com/2006/05/random-musings-vignettes-and-thoughts.html

Tuesday, May 30, 2006. Random Musings, Vignettes and Thoughts. A few disconnected thoughts from the road, accumulated over the past few weeks. Why is it that, as I've gotten further south, where it's hot all the time, it's become harder and harder to find cold beer and decent ice cream? Most places, I have to have ice cubes in my beer to make it drinkable, and ice cream is as scarce as hen's teeth. Don't people here find it as hot as I do? I thought I'd seen every possible method of rowing a boat during ...

Veering Through Vietnam: North by Northwest

http://vietnamveering.blogspot.com/2006/05/north-by-northwest.html

Thursday, May 04, 2006. The riding has been fairly uneventful since Ha Giang. I had a long day riding down to Viet Quang (the place that I missed by 45 km on my first attempt) and then across to Pho Rang, along gently undulating roads under bright sunshine (haven't had much of that this trip so far! The roads were paved and wide and a pure pleasure to ride along. Until next time,. Posted by xuanzang @ 1:45 PM. Responses to Seeing a Foreigner on a Bicycle- A Fi. The Odyssey of Northeast Vietnam.

Veering Through Vietnam: April 2006

http://vietnamveering.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 27, 2006. Scroll-painting mountains, Filet de Fido and big climbs in the land of the light-fingered locals. Bac Can, km 580 (or so). Hello all. It's the end of a long, frustrating day here in Bac Can, dealing with the police. So since I last wrote, I have cycled to Halong Bay, one of the must-see sights of Vietnam, then made my way along increasingly obscure back roads here, en route to a national park that had better be worth the effort in getting to! Posted by xuanzang @ 7:07 PM. I have...

Veering Through Vietnam: June 2006

http://vietnamveering.blogspot.com/2006_06_01_archive.html

Thursday, June 15, 2006. Sai-going, Sai-going, Sai-gone! Saigon, 4020 km from the start. I escaped from the hot and unpleasant confines of National Route 1A this morning and rode into surprisingly civilized and quiet Saigon, vastly relieved to be out of the traffic, diesel fumes and ear-splitting din of the highway. At me during this trip. I used to think it was a greeting. Then I changed my classification to that of a challenge or a demand. Then I realized that it was the equivalent of zoo-g...The after...

Silk Road Ride: June 2009

http://silkroadride.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Thursday, June 18, 2009. A map of the trip. So here, a little small but still legible (I hope; actually it doesn't look so hot, but if you double-click on it, it will reappear larger and more legible), is a map of where I went in 2002 (green) and 2004 (pink) and where I plan to go this year (blue). The map is from the Silk Road Foundation. Website, source of all sorts of scholarly knowledge about the trade in goods and ideas along the Silk Road. I talked with Peter Vallance at Rocky Mountain Bicycles.

Friday, June 29, 2007. Ulaangom, June 29. We're in Ulaangom, another dusty, scruffy aimag capital here in western Mongolia, after a surprisingly nice 4-day ride to get here from Olgiy. It's a much-needed day off here, and we've just come back from purchasing a small mountain of food for the upcoming 10-day ride to Moron. Here's the lowdown on the past 4 days. Monday, June 25: Day 6 since Khovd 76 km. Tuesday, June 26: Day 7 47 km. Wednesday, June 27: Day 8 53 km. Thursday, June 28: Day 9 87 km. Post-Sovi...

The story of a hurried bicycle tour through the chilly Balkans in November and December, 2009. Wednesday, December 23, 2009. An Ignominious End to the Blitz. Tripoli, Libya, December 23. Please forgive the long gap between posts, but a lot has happened since I last wrote from Mostar, and I haven't had much Internet access to update my trip. The story of a hurried bicycle tour through the chilly Balkans in November and December, 2009. Tuesday, December 1, 2009. Dawdling in Dubrovnik, Moseying to Mostar. Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina, December 1. I am sitting in a wonderful and completely deserted hostel here in Mostar, trying to bring my blog up to date after a few days of eventful riding and thought-provoking scenery and conversations. Dubrovnik was a major port on the Adriatic for centuries, first under Venetian control b. I finally tore myse...
