A blog about where I am and what I'm doing, who I am and where I'm from. Written for and read by only my sister. Friday, April 13, 2007. Here’s Marburg from Editha’s window. Editha’s a friend of my sister who I visited for Easter. Marburg is a university town of 80K about an hour outside Frankfort, DE. Jacob Grimm, who studied (along with his brother) at the university, spoke of the “magical effect of Marburg on his soul.”. In 1905 Rilke called Marburg a “tiny crooked town.”. And a garden through a door.

As I intern at the Center for Rural Affairs, I’m learning about how the agricultural economy we have now is not inevitable. It can be changed. Take these two scenarios:. In these stories, the rancher and the farmer both choose to keep silent about any outrage they might feel. They justify their choices with the reason that they don&#...

A blog about where I am and what I'm doing, who I am and where I'm from. Written for and read by only my sister. Friday, July 06, 2007. Eleven months ago, I left home with a former ex-boyfriend, a small, full red backpack, and oodles of ideals. I thought this was all I would need in Slovakia. And it was, in the sense that what a farmer primarily needs to bring to his field is a few seeds and a lot of manure. A few sprouted; most died. To find yourself proven right is not to be happy. Rather, happines...

A blog about where I am and what I'm doing, who I am and where I'm from. Written for and read by only my sister. Tuesday, September 14, 2010. Globalization and Rural Communities. Want to be challenged? Check out Richard Longworth’s 2008 book Caught in the Middle: America’s Heartland in the Age of Globalism. I think this oversimplifies the situation. To “seize the future,” the Midwest and rural communities need not make a clean break from the past. Instead, we need to reclaim and take ...Longworth’s...

A blog about where I am and what I'm doing, who I am and where I'm from. Written for and read by only my sister. Wednesday, August 25, 2010. The Scale of Our Daily Lives. The sheer size of the crises that we face can be overwhelming. In addition to the earthquake in Haiti, floods in Pakistan and the BP oil spill, we have chronic environmental problems like the dead zone growing in the Gulf of Mexico, tons of topsoil being lost from the Great Plains, and mountaintop removal mining in Appalachia. For examp...

A blog about where I am and what I'm doing, who I am and where I'm from. Written for and read by only my sister. Tuesday, September 15, 2009. I’m sitting and reading in one of my many fluorescent book nooks when my mind drifts outside. I remember a walk I took a few weeks ago with a professor in the country. Then the rain started blowing from the south. We slipped down the side of the tracks and waited underneath the shelterbelt for a while. The professor’s dog ran in and out of the weeds. Besides the as...

Sits on my coffee table trunk, crooning a siren song of stories. Tonight I will give in and carry it upstairs to bed with me. Two articles in particular sound irresistible:.
