Ah, wats… | This Journey
http://blog.thisjourney.com/2012/05/05/ah-wats
Ah, wats…. May 5, 2012. As I make my way through Vietnam, I have to admit I am missing the beautiful and diverse wats I saw in Thailand. Buddhism in Thailand is pretty “user friendly”. I’m still getting a grasp on the spirituality of the Vietnamese… Anyway, here are some more photos from Thailand that I didn’t get a chance to post yet. Wat Srisuphan is known for hosting/training silversmiths. Much of the temple’s adornment is created in silver. Wat Phan Tao, constructed of teak:. Ironman Nice, France.

Street Food-UPDATED | This Journey
http://blog.thisjourney.com/2012/04/29/hanoi-street-food
April 29, 2012. I took part in Hanoi Cooking Centre’s half-day Street Food/Market Tour – highly recommended! Our guide took his time showing us one of the MANY fresh food markets in town. You can get every ingredient you need in one stop – produce, meat, seafood, spices, sauces, rice, noodles, herbs…. Vietnam being “moto nation”, they of course roll right through the skinny aisles of the market, right up the stand they want. A little bit different way to buy your chicken thighs! Next stop was for banh cu...

http://blog.thisjourney.com/2012/05/05/ha-long-bay
May 5, 2012. Ha Long Bay is comprised of thousands of tall limestone islands spread over about 1500 km. The name translates to “descending dragon bay”. The kayaking each evening was so relaxing…. We pulled up to an island with a beach for some swimming, relaxing and cave exploring. Here is our ship, the Prince III! Ironman Nice, France. Brian Hannah on Phnom Penh. Older: Ah, wats…. Saigon | This Journey
http://blog.thisjourney.com/2012/05/08/saigon
May 8, 2012. Officially it’s Ho Chi Minh City but most everyone still calls it Saigon. The heart of the city is more international and modern than Hanoi, while still keeping grounded in lots of Vietnam flavor. I was impressed with Saigon’s green spaces in the middle of the city. Where ever I travel, I’m drawn to parks, big or small, that are well done. As with Hanoi (everywhere really), crossing the street is sport. It takes some practice and quite often a leap of faith! I made a stop at the beautifully ...

Saigon by Vespa | This Journey
http://blog.thisjourney.com/2012/05/11/saigon-by-vespa
May 11, 2012. My last night in Ho Chi Minh City I did the Saigon After Dark tour with Vietnam Vespa Adventures. What a blast! It lasts 4-5 hours and you get zipped all over town on the back of a vintage Vespa, stopping for local food and drinks along the way. I felt quite safe in the capable hands of my driver! One stop was for seafood – super fresh and still alive, including all the shellfish. Next up were some very popular frog legs. Bullfrog that is! Well, never say never! I also loved out stop for mo...

Hanoi Comes Alive | This Journey
http://blog.thisjourney.com/2012/04/28/hanoi-comes-alive
April 28, 2012. Hanoi, Vietnam, my next world capital… This is one unreal place. And I thought Bangkok was pumping! To be fair, I am staying in the Old Quarter, which is overrun with motorbikes and everything and everyone spilled out onto every sidewalk. And the streets are a labyrinth – I don’t dare leave the hotel without a map and a compass (seriously! At dusk this plaza near the lake was bustling with families, young kids and teenagers with skateboards, etc. These little cars are remote controlled.

Angkor, Day 1 | This Journey
http://blog.thisjourney.com/2012/05/14/angkor-day-1
Angkor, Day 1. May 14, 2012. It turns out I had a little bonus time here at the end of the schedule, so I bought a three day pass for the park and I’m taking a “free day” in between each temple day. Another cooking class is on Wednesday! I hired the tuk-tuk driver, Kean, that I used from the airport. His English was understandable and I had a good first impression of him. That says a lot around here! I tell him what time to pick me up at the hotel and off we go for the day! Ta Som, late 12th century.

Full Moon in Hoi An | This Journey
http://blog.thisjourney.com/2012/05/06/full-moon-in-hoi-an
Full Moon in Hoi An. May 6, 2012. Fresh doughnuts and sweet fritters are popular. Kem means ice cream (good word to know if you’re traveling in Vietnam this time of year! Lanterns are the big thing in Hoi An. Be prepared, though, for a hard sell in this tourist town. The vendors will be calling out to you all day and night. Still, it’s a great town for strolling, eating and shopping. The Lychee Gimlet was pretty bomb too. Hoi An is also famous for this particular Banh Mi stand on Hoang Dieu Street. E...
