The Teacher in Room 10: March 2012

http://theteacherin10.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

The Teacher in Room 10. The joys and discoveries, ups and downs of life in my Special Education classroom. Tuesday, March 6, 2012. Question of the week is: when does what one person needs become more important than the needs of everyone else? Actually, it’s the question of the year, but seems to have crystallized in the last few very rough weeks, as I struggle to find answers for myself about hierarchy of needs and how to make sure everyone is getting what they need and deserve. Don’t even talk to ...

The Teacher in Room 10. The joys and discoveries, ups and downs of life in my Special Education classroom. Sunday, January 13, 2013. Letting Go. Or, Careful what you wish for. I love all my kiddos. They are amazing, quirky, smart, funny and affectionate, each in their own ways. For a taste of what we were all going through then. However, even with the meds, even with consistency and amazing levels of support from all kinds of sources, good days for him still are a pleasant surprise. I was thrilled for hi...

Here’s the Globe and Mail article. I’ve written about Carly before. What might have happened (or not happened! If I had responded THAT way? The Teacher in Room 10. The joys and discoveries, ups and downs of life in my Special Education classroom. Monday, November 19, 2012. 8220;Sunshine is reading” – A true story! As a teacher, reading aloud to kids has always been one of my favourite parts of the job, and the three years I spent as teacher-librarian before taking on Room 10 were often a blissed-out blur of awesome picture books and rich nonfiction. Names blurred, but you get the idea! Grid 1 with pics, Grid 2 without. Once they can do this ...

Musings of a Mentoring Mom. Getting Ready to Put on the Warrior Mom Cape, Again. Diams; January 18, 2013. Diams; 2 Comments. We’ve all donned our Warrior Mom capes when it comes to our children. Fighting for what they need at school, calling out the bullies at the neighborhood pool, calling the Services Squadron commander when the summer camp program let my daughter crisp fry to a crackly crunch at the beach, telling the doctor that they won’t get that flu shot. Musings of a Mentoring Mom. Not Everyone Has a Good Attitude about the Real Meaning of Christmas. Diams; December 25, 2012. Diams; Leave a comment. The other morning I woke up and was looking at my Facebook notifications when I saw one from my niece that said something to the effect of, “Don’t tag me in this bullshit stuff again! 8221; Uh-oh. Musings of a Mentoring Mom. Support: What’s it all about anyway? Diams; August 7, 2013. Diams; 2 Comments. After an event earlier this week, I thought it might be a good idea to write about support and what I think good support should be. The definition of support, according to dictionary.com, is to sustain a person under trial or affliction. In this case, autism and the many issues that go along with it …. Continue reading →. Musings of a Mentoring Mom. 8220;The Big A. The Gift that Keeps on Giving.”. Diams; January 23, 2013. Diams; Leave a comment. Autism is no picnic. Having a child on the spectrum is no picnic. Even if your child is high functioning there are still many hills to climb, assorted obstacles to normalcy. One of those challenges is social skills. New house, new school. You see even though we had my son in Scouts so he could get to know some of the other neighborhood boys, he didn’t quite fit in and for th...

About | Musings of a Mentoring Mom

https://musingsofamentoringmom.wordpress.com/about

Musings of a Mentoring Mom. If you had told me six years ago what my journey would be, I probably wouldn’t have believed you. I was an officer in the Air Force Reserve doing quite well. Sometimes I really miss the work I was doing there. In 2006, my son was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. As the journey of having a special-needs child unfolded, I found my priorities needed to shift and I had a lot of learning to do. It was a lot like being fed from a fire hose. The Teacher in the Rye | A Swell Blog About Teaching Middle School

The Teacher in the Rye. A Swell Blog About Teaching Middle School. On the Eve of Year Five. August 19, 2014. August 19, 2014. Sometimes teachers joke about the quirks of the job. You know, the kids who say inappropriate things in class at which we wish we could laugh. The helicopter parents. The use of LOL in an essay. But, teaching is more than that. Teaching is the only job I’ve ever done (for more than a few years, I might add), for which I am well-suited. I, too, had many misconceptions of what publi...
