The Age of Noise

The Age of Noise. Tuesday, June 2, 2009. Yes, this is the joke of life, the big one: you’re not always fully alive, just like poems and paintings are not always beautiful, the bars not always full, friends not always in touch. When you go climbing out of your bedroom Rachmaninov is not always there, kneading aloft to the sunrise, cartwheeling round with the beat. There are extraordinary periods of time where we simply cease to be. alive. And yet there we are. And then it’s gone. Almost sounds like a novel.

The Age of Noise: Labor for glory

http://www.theageofnoise.blogspot.com/2009/05/labor-for-glory.html

The Age of Noise. Wednesday, May 27, 2009. On a recent trip out to Nevada I was standing on the shoulder of a remote desert highway at two o’clock in the morning, quiet along the rutted edge of sun-crozzled pavement thrust amongst a black silence of sagebrush and Joshua trees. Nothing moving and nothing lit, not even a rind of the moon. A collection of nothings, in fact: no cars; no planes; no radios. No phone service. No insects or birds or rustling fauna. Not even a gentle breath of wind. Someday we di...

The Age of Noise: March 2008

http://www.theageofnoise.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html

The Age of Noise. Monday, March 31, 2008. The nature of memory. Days in the past cover up little by little those that preceded them and are themselves buried beneath those that follow them. But each past day has remained deposited in us, as, in a vast library in which there are older books, a volume which, doubtless, nobody will ever ask to see.". Well, I was on emotional crack when I was sixteen, and it all happened because of a book. I remember the couch I was on when I read it. I remember what...I sto...

The Age of Noise: The ballad of El Burrito

http://www.theageofnoise.blogspot.com/2008/07/el-burrito.html

The Age of Noise. Saturday, July 19, 2008. The ballad of El Burrito. In the beginning, my dad never actually intended to become a photographer. He went to UMKC in the late 60s/early 70s and got his degree in English (! And economics before becoming a traveling salesman. He got his start when he shot a few polaroids at a wedding, more out of curiosity than anything. When he started his business my grandfather told him that he'd never make money taking pictures; he told him that he should get a "real" job.

The Age of Noise: What it means to be a writer

http://www.theageofnoise.blogspot.com/2008/09/what-it-means-to-be-writer.html

The Age of Noise. Saturday, September 27, 2008. What it means to be a writer. The problem was that, in our heads, we’re all geniuses. We are all the stars of our own lives, as David Foster Wallace had once noted; the most important person to ever exist. We’re all cologned with some slight expectation of greatness. So I sat on my little bench in Chicago penning the obituary for my own glory. Good. Nice to get that out of the way. Let’s talk about writing as a tool for survival. When David Foster Wallace d...

Chasing Sunsets: The Final Countdown *cue awesome music*

http://nickleburycreek.blogspot.com/2009/09/final-countdown-cue-awesome-music.html

Friday, September 11, 2009. The Final Countdown *cue awesome music*. Having said that, I feel like just winging it. It'd be so much easier, right? Even when I'm letting go of all that I know, God will never let go of me. . I have to trust that God is faithful and doesn't lose sight of me and my heart's desires. And this is what I'm hoping for. Chasing Sunsets: September 2008

http://nickleburycreek.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Monday, September 29, 2008. I promise, one of these days I will be strong. Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. - John 14:1. I wish sometimes I could just go back to October of my freshman year and just believe in you like I used to. When I felt you so deep inside me that I was infectious with joy. Do you remember that? Two nights ago I feel like I confronted myself with the scariest question that I could ever have, one I can not answer and one that leaves me longing. If it...

Chasing Sunsets: September 2009

http://nickleburycreek.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

Monday, September 14, 2009. Landing in London, my first reactions. Oh good Lord, it is one crowded city! Ok, granted, should have expected this from one of the world's biggest cities, but boy, I was a little surprised. I love my midget hotel room. Its so different for me that I'm just getting used to it, I go from the peaceful, spacious Colorado to the hustle and bustle of London. It's like being on two different planets. . Chasing Sunsets: “Beyond the Neon Lights”

http://nickleburycreek.blogspot.com/2010/01/beyond-neon-lights.html

Sunday, January 3, 2010. 8220;Beyond the Neon Lights”. Here's a poem that I wrote about London and the impressions it had on me. It seems dark, but it really isn't. its more just my realistic interpretation with a touch of creative imagination added in. The grains of history stain these. This city’s grit grinds between grimy fingertips,. Crust falling in the wrinkles of skin. This is (soak it in). Silent squalls of the employed move like. Brush-strokes swept across a canvas. Whispering, shouting,. Wunder...

Chasing Sunsets: November 2008

http://nickleburycreek.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Sunday, November 9, 2008. An old woman sits alone,. Swinging on her front porch swing,. Watching highway cars pass, tiny specks of shimmering color. Her eyes are sepia. Radiance fading like tea-stained paper. Her eyes stare into the prairie’s grassy depths. No squinting or blinking, the sun burns her pupils. Her face etched with the Plains, she chews the grit between her teeth. Sandpaper wrinkles give texture to sagging skin. Her hair is soft, white like the feathers she plucked for her pillow.

Chasing Sunsets: August 2008

http://nickleburycreek.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

Tuesday, August 12, 2008. I will post sections of the piece from time to time. Some of it will be cliche and some of it will be unedited, because mainly I have never written anything on this scale before, so it's bound to have mistakes. It's called "Chasing Sunsets" and the first part is the Introduction that I would like to call "Sixteen and Gray". Enjoy. INTRODUCTION- -"Sixteen and Gray". Sunday, August 3, 2008. Chasing Sunsets: July 2008

http://nickleburycreek.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

Monday, July 28, 2008. In Columbia of all places. Can you believe it? Everyone will not be hanging out all the time. I may not see people for days. . Everyone will be busy. Will I continue to have this hope and this joy even if my social life changes? If there's one thing I hope that I have gotten out of this summer, I am praying that it I will learn by now that I have the strength within me to recover and move on. I am praying that I have learned by now that God will love and need me and provide. So tha...

Just another WordPress.com site. April 16, 2012. Friday November 11, 2011. Today, I went sight-seeing, but not in the normal sense. I went to trek through Jakarta and see what the city was like. At this point, I have experienced little and wanted to wander by myself. I had a destination in mind, Laila’s workplace downtown at the Blok M. Everywhere I go, I have a compass. Do I have a map? Later, I met Laila at Ratu plaza. I was on a mission to find a plug-in converter. Not two days later a bright red rash...
