The Software Life: January 2015
http://thesoftwarelife.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Thoughts and experiences from the world of commercial and open source software. Sunday, January 25, 2015. I just finished reading Effective Modern C. By Scott Meyers. Like his More Effective C and the original Effective C it's well written with good explanations and examples. This third book covers the latest C features in C 11 and 14. It's been a long time since I read the first two books. Effective C was published in 1991! Which in some ways is a reaction to the complexity of C . Links to this post.

The Software Life: Beautiful Code for Parsing
http://thesoftwarelife.blogspot.com/2015/05/beautiful-code-for-parsing.html
Thoughts and experiences from the world of commercial and open source software. Saturday, May 16, 2015. Beautiful Code for Parsing. I've recently been reading up on JavaScript. One of the books I was re-reading was JavaScript: The Good Parts. By Douglas Crockford. In there he mentioned the chapter he wrote in Beautiful Code. Of which, there are mixed reviews. That's ok, I wouldn't mind re-reading the whole book. The chapter was on parsing based on Top Down Operator Precedence by Vaughn Pratt. It always s...

The Software Life: June 2015
http://thesoftwarelife.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Thoughts and experiences from the world of commercial and open source software. Tuesday, June 09, 2015. Transpiling Suneido to JavaScript. Is source to source compiling, translating from one language to another, where both languages are at a similar level of abstraction. For the background on why we'd want to do this, see my previous blog post on suneido.js. I added an AstParse function. So far I have statement and expression translation almost complete, and minimal versions of the runtime support routin...

The Software Life: November 2013
http://thesoftwarelife.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Thoughts and experiences from the world of commercial and open source software. Saturday, November 09, 2013. On the train to Montreal.] After getting my fill of reading I pulled out my laptop to do a little programming. I clicked on Eclipse and got a message that I needed Java 6 and it wouldn't start. It helpfully offered to install one but I had no internet so that failed. This was working fine when I used it a few days ago so I assume an OS X update removed it. But five minutes later I remembered that ...

The Software Life: Visual Studio Tip
http://thesoftwarelife.blogspot.com/2015/07/visual-studio-tip.html
Thoughts and experiences from the world of commercial and open source software. Monday, July 13, 2015. I've been trying out Visual Studio 2015 Community RC and every time I did a build I'd get:. All packages are already installed and there is nothing to restore. NuGet package restore finished. It didn't seem to hurt anything, but I prefer to keep the build output clean so eventually I got tired of it and figured out you can get rid of it using Tools Options. The Software Life: January 2014
http://thesoftwarelife.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Thoughts and experiences from the world of commercial and open source software. Sunday, January 26, 2014. I just finished reading Java SE 8 for the Really Impatient. By Cay S. Horstmann. I'd recommend it as an introduction to Java 8 features. I've also read Cay's Scala for the Impatient, and used his Core Java books for reference. No doubt there will be other Java 8 books arriving soon. Pragmatic Programmers has Functional Programming in Java. Also has early support for Java 8. Links to this post. Our in...

The Software Life: February 2015
http://thesoftwarelife.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Thoughts and experiences from the world of commercial and open source software. Monday, February 09, 2015. How does one learn it? It is working through an invisible iron wall that seems to stand between what one feels and what one can do.”. I used to think what I was looking for was good design. On more cynical days I'd settle for any design, or not even design, just some kind of structure. I guess that's a bit like saying you want "quality". Would that be good quality or bad quality? Much of the blame g...

The Software Life: May 2014
http://thesoftwarelife.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Thoughts and experiences from the world of commercial and open source software. Tuesday, May 27, 2014. I was just looking at some stats on the average time our customers' servers take to run our application test suite. I noticed on a particular day the times dropped from an average of 240 seconds to an average of 200 seconds. (These are averages from about 240 customer sites.) The numbers are generally quite stable so I was curious what changed. Links to this post. Monday, May 19, 2014. Obviously this is...
