A sewing blog without the sewing. In which I publish our bimonthly half-hour-long video. Because I was dragging my feet in answering the comments from “Shibboleth” and as my bottomless well of laziness bubbled its way to the surface, I’ve made our video. I answer the comments, in helter-skelter order, as well as Craftastrophies. 8216; comment on “for those who think young.” I forgot to answer Laura’s. 7 Comments to “In which I publish our bimonthly half-hour-long video.”. 1 June 2015 at 6:44 am. goodbye to all that | Seam Ripped
https://seamrippedblog.wordpress.com/2015/06/01/goodbye-to-all-that
A sewing blog without the sewing. Goodbye to all that. Today I decided that I’m not going to wear any florals to work. Or fruit. Or animals. (Well, the occasional bird might sneak in, because I am a human of a certain sort.). The question is—and I’ve asked this before, and ask it constantly—what does it take to be taken seriously? I have to be comfortable, obviously, but what else? What is business casual, anyway? Which would require me to tone down and/or eliminate all of my Mindy Lahiri tendencies.

A sewing blog without the sewing. Where i’m calling from. Thank you, Joan Didion. In your spirit (or, as an affront to it), I did not proofread this.]. I remember exactly when my shirtwaist dress obsession started. It wasn’t with Betty Draper. Indeed, it was with a three-year-old. Autumn/Spring of 1000 Shirtdresses. And every time I turn around, there’s a pattern release with MOAR SHIRTDRESSES. Hallelujah. So, when Wendy from Coser Cosas. Is this a shirtwaist dress? Is it not a shirtwaist dress? So, if t...
Shibboleth | Seam Ripped

A sewing blog without the sewing. I started writing this last year, and, in the spirit of cleaning out my drafts folder, refuse to change any of the anachronisms. You’re welcome. Also, still in the middle of answering comments, but thought I’d get this out while it’s on my mind.]. I’m taking you to Sunday School today, reader: we’re going to talk about shibboleths. Now, the contemporary dime-store definition of a. What’s the moral of that story? Bee eff dee, Charlotte! The first time I went to buy an Her...

A sewing blog without the sewing. For those who think young. Your bimonthly video. God, I’m worried that my face is going to stay frozen like that in real life. 26 Comments to “for those who think young”. 13 April 2015 at 6:39 pm. GIVE ME THAT WATERCOLOR GINGHAM! I don’t know. Lastly, I noticed that for instance on Pinterest if you have a “fashion” board and “sewing inspiration” (sewspo? Is that a thing? Board they are often very different. Why is that? 14 April 2015 at 2:05 pm. Why flowers but not fruit?

Well, I made it through my week of scoring AP essays! This year the scoring took place in Kansas City, MO rather than Louisville, KY as it had in all the prior years I’ve gone. It used to take place in Daytona Beach, FL, but I missed out on that awesome experience! I threw in a Cotton and Steel double gauze for good measure and began on my merry way making seven dresses. Can you blame me for being such a spendthrift? Isn’t that print one of the most gorgeous things ever? All seven of my dresses were repe...

City Lights Voile Grainline Alder. Here’s yet another Alder – number five to be precise! I really don’t have much to say about this dress that I didn’t say in my post about my Liberty Alder. The Liberty Alder armholes are high, but not as uncomfortably so as these. These buttons are not very thrilling, sorry! Well, I made it through my week of scoring AP essays! I threw in a Cotton and Steel double gauze for good measure and began on my merry way making seven dresses. View B Alders are unaltered, but thi...

Craft: (old English) ‘power’. ‘strength’, ‘might’. May 25, 2015. June 11, 2015. So here is my second M6696, which I DID finish in time for my self imposed deadline and wore when I was in Sydney for the Thrilling Adventure Hour shows. Which were, by the way, amazing. I think that’s not too bad, really, for a dress with this many bits. Yes My room is 100% trashed. During problem solving, I laid the sleeve pattern over a pattern I know works for me, the sleeve from my Ottobre tops. And my ottobre dress.

Soeur de la Lune. Sunday, March 15, 2015. New Look 6183 and an Ignominious Sewing First. It all began when I downloaded the Burdavisor program. Which allows you to view the contents of Burda Style back issues including line drawings and magazine/mannequin photos. It's pretty neat, and I have a tendency to get sucked in on rainy afternoons! Liberated woman or not, her dresses are beautiful, and this one in particular struck me:. I think it came out really well! I did make some slight modifications to the ...

Soeur de la Lune. Saturday, December 20, 2014. Simplicity 1419 - The Russian Wodka Dress. I used to really like the Lisette line of patterns for Simplicity. The first collection was like an adorable exercise in coordination- the colors, the fabric swatches on the envelopes, the little names they all were given. But then I actually made some (the Passport. Dress and the Portfolio. Changed all of that! Checking on cookies. You mean to say that you don't. Do Industrial Christmas Baking dressed like this?

Saturday, May 30, 2015. There are also some folded pants, jeans, t-shirts, elsewhere, but this is basically my wardrobe right now. I try to keep my color palette in mind, so things would go together well. It's very casual, but that suits my lifestyle. I wear the same things to work as I do on my days off, so I don't need a lot of clothes and I LOVE comfort - a lot of sewing with knits. June 1, 2015 at 11:42 AM. August 23, 2015 at 9:46 AM. Made in my living room. New Look 6145 – Do you know an architect called Maya? One year ago – well, one year and 13 days to be exact – I went to my first sewing meetup. It was the big London meeting at V&A organised by Rachel at House of Pinheiro. That happened 2 months ago when I found out about Simplicity’s blogger challenge. The ‘Best dressmaking project’ category pattern was New Look 6145. I love this length on me, I have to make a version as long as my muslin. Removed 1 cm wedge from CB. I think the ...
duck bucket sewing: all righty!
http://duckbucket.blogspot.com/2015/12/all-righty.html
Harley, my hard-working sewing assistant. Sunday, December 20, 2015. I'm starting an Alabama Chanin dress. It's based on a color scheme I saw at the AC workshop in New York this summer - sand for the top layer, dark gray for the bottom layer, red for the thread color. It's not something I would have ordinarily picked — I gravitate toward blues and blacks most of the time — but the sample blew me away. I think I grabbed Natalie and said, "What.is.that? Can I be honest? Oh, the other interesting thing that...

Harley, my hard-working sewing assistant. Wednesday, June 15, 2016. Born of frustration: Alabama Chanin fingerless gloves. My dermatologist yelled at me. "You're doing a good job of protecting your face," she said, "but you have quite a bit of sun damage around your neck and shoulders, and you have got. To watch your arms and hands.". Then she zapped two not-precancerous-yet-but-they-could-be-someday things on my arms. AUGH. Enter: Alabama Chanin fingerless gloves! These are wearable muslins. I made ...

Harley, my hard-working sewing assistant. Monday, October 24, 2016. We said goodbye to him this weekend. I miss him a lot. Hunkered down in the window, snoozing in the sewing room, stalking heating vents, chasing his tail. the house feels weird and empty without him. Our other cat, Cinders, knows something's up, and she seems pretty unsettled. So am I. He was so funny - the type of cat that took everything extremely seriously, until he didn't. The ridiculous baby t-shirt:. I'll miss you, buddy. November ...

Seam Ripped | a sewing blog without the sewing
A sewing blog without the sewing. In the comments for “goodbye to all that,” Blogless Terry made an excellent observation. Business casual is Olivia Pope. There’s a difference between the way characters are portrayed in film and the way that real-life women of power dress, sure, but I think that media stands in conversation with the world of real life, and that it simultaneously reflects and molds the ways in which we consider powerful women. Y now, most of America has seen what has been dubbed, “the worst Super Bowl commercial of all time,” the somber Nationwide insurance ad called, “Make Safe Happen.”.
