Reaching Broadly: Kingston Day 6

http://www.reachingbroadly.blogspot.com/2015/07/kingston-day-6.html

A dinghy sailor old enough to retire but who continues trying to get his Laser (and occasional other boat) into a watery groove. Sunday, July 19, 2015. It was a good day for me - even though it rained a bit. Three races and no last places - Wahoo! First race an OK start but then, as usual, losing places on the upwind. I tell myself I am a bit light (around 78 kg) and that is why I suffer upwind. Maybe or perhaps a lack of skills? At any rate, in every race, I do much better downwind or on reaches. Anothe...

A dinghy sailor old enough to retire but who continues trying to get his Laser (and occasional other boat) into a watery groove. Friday, May 8, 2015. My first Laser Battle. Post described a confrontation between Burton and Stipanovic. Here is the followup. Tillerman already knew the answer but gallantly abstained from posting a spoiler. You can read the decision. See Protest 36). The following is my take on it. And that strategy is perfectly legal as long as it is done within the rules. And, given that t...

A dinghy sailor old enough to retire but who continues trying to get his Laser (and occasional other boat) into a watery groove. Monday, July 20, 2015. Well, all good things must come to and and Kingston did, on a bright sunny day with light breezes. I had two decent races and, hallelujah, I did not end the regatta in last place - wahoo! In fact, I had 2 twelfth place finishes today - my best scores. Sunday, July 19, 2015. It was a good day for me - even though it rained a bit. As I did in this race - de...

Reaching Broadly: April 2015

A dinghy sailor old enough to retire but who continues trying to get his Laser (and occasional other boat) into a watery groove. Wednesday, April 22, 2015. As I get more and more into the world of judging, I wonder about the role of the Rules/protests/hearings etc. at the Club level. Is that the best course? Some say we should have more real protests as a way of learning and gaining experience with the whole process. Others are happy to just let things continue as they have been. What does your Club do?

Reaching Broadly: April 2014

http://www.reachingbroadly.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

A dinghy sailor old enough to retire but who continues trying to get his Laser (and occasional other boat) into a watery groove. Tuesday, April 1, 2014. Just Another Club Race. Our club race last weekend was amazing. It looked to be a bit blustery and it was – by the time the preparatory flag was up, it was around 20 knots and higher in gusts. Although it was blustery, I managed a clean bear away and started sailing by the lee immediately, using the technique that Doug recommended. But the really sad thi...

Slipper Musings: April 2013

http://slippermusings.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 30 April 2013. Training-partner-Claire muses on a weekends racing. I was away at the weekend, so Claire has given a report from the local racing scene. Kudos to Claire for sailing a 2.5 hour race in winds up to 32 knots and keeping the boat upright! It was pretty wavy, my laser was being a bit battered around, and Emsworth looked an awfully long way away, but the wind calmed down a bit after a while – still. Sunday, 28 April 2013. Initial observations from this weekends 300 open. 3 Its all about...

Slipper Musings: February 2013

http://slippermusings.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, 10 February 2013. Stupid windy sailing, days like today are for windsurfing. The forecast for the whole week showed very pleasant conditions with the exception of a day of wind starting at 09:30 on Sunday morning, and for once the forecasts were correct. SSE F4-6ish, start time of 1000, and a little consternation in the assembled fleet on the shore. At this point I was leading the 300s, and not a million miles off the ISO/400 - that concluded the good half of the race. We are off to Brazil for a ...

Slipper Musings: November 2013

http://slippermusings.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

Monday, 25 November 2013. Hare and Hounds 6 - Carnage on the start line and windward leg. Very different conditions for racing on Sunday, a northerly offshore wind which was very gusty and shifty. But that didn't put off the 44 boats from taking to the water for the latest in the series. Just too many boats in too small a space. We need to have a think about whether this is working for the fleet. Anyway, some observations from the racing and results:. Great to see three Lasers in the top ten, headed by M...

Slipper Musings: December 2012

http://slippermusings.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html

Sunday, 30 December 2012. Sailing Goals for 2013. So here are the themes for 2013:. 1 Heavy wind sailing, specifically downwind. Lots to do here, but watch this space for a Steve Cockerill critique. Anything up to a Force 4/5 is fine, but I can't wait to be able to look forward to a wavy downwind leg in a F5 . Until last week I thought the problem with this particular objective is that you need strong winds to practice - not so says Mr C, 10-12 knots is adequate! Thursday, 27 December 2012. A bit too muc...

Slipper Musings: June 2013

http://slippermusings.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, 23 June 2013. Windy Junior Training at Slipper. Today the older Juniors took to the water for some training in a testing force 6. Some of the adults were out racing and clearly finding the conditions a challenge, I noticed the legend that is training-partner-Claire coming back with a liberal coating of Sweare Deep mud at the top of her 4.7 rig! Anyway, here is a little vid of the juniors ripping it up in the Little Deep area. Saturday, 22 June 2013. The first starts for our FNO junior sailors.

Slipper Musings: Time to get back on the horse

http://slippermusings.blogspot.com/2013/11/time-to-get-back-on-horse.html

Wednesday, 13 November 2013. Time to get back on the horse. So it is Hare and Hounds time again at the club, given that this blog started with the H&H last year I thought I'd maybe revive it for the racing this year. But first a summary of the last 4 months. Since my last post, I have:. 1 Been beaten into submission by the water state (and better sailors) at Stokes Bay for the 300 nationals. Nearly sold the boat. Dave Acres sailed an excellent series to win the nationals, great for our local fleet. View ...

Slipper Musings: May 2013

http://slippermusings.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Monday, 27 May 2013. 300 Log: No result, but an excellent race. Race : Down Harbour Handicap race, 2 hours. Conditions : F0-4 N, mostly flat water apart from the main harbour bay, which had chop from all directions. Result : Would have been 1st of 20, and 1st 300, but for forgetting to sign on (again! Pleased with reaching speed, although the wind was at that marginal point where I think being a lightweight helped with early planning. Going high in the lulls and low in the gusts gave a substantial le...

Slipper Musings: The Ten Commandments for Lightweights in the 300

http://slippermusings.blogspot.com/2013/11/the-ten-commandments-for-lightweights.html

Wednesday, 20 November 2013. The Ten Commandments for Lightweights in the 300. A few musings on 300 sailing for the lighter and more delicately built helm, on the Rooster blog here. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Who is this reprobate? A small blog to cover sailing matters at Emsworth Slipper SC, and the trails and tribulations of an aspiring RS 300 sailor. Slipper Musings: Training-partner-Claire dislocates shoulder in bizarre gybing incident

http://slippermusings.blogspot.com/2013/08/training-partner-claire-dislocates.html

Monday, 5 August 2013. Training-partner-Claire dislocates shoulder in bizarre gybing incident. The motivation to blog is a fickle mistress, but several things this weekend provided the impetus to pen a few musings:. 1 Claire dislocated her shoulder, crewing an ISO. And it had nothing to do with the helm. 2 Finn Junior European champion Pete McCoy comes back to his home club to sail a 400 with the legendary jager-bomb-consumer that is Alex Thorsby. I can only assume one of the following scenarios:. For th...

A dinghy sailor old enough to retire but who continues trying to get his Laser (and occasional other boat) into a watery groove. Saturday, August 8, 2015. The Troll's Older Brother. We have a large highway bridge at the north end of our sailing area and a troll lives under it. I know this because at times when you sail near it, especially with an incoming tide, there are various wind shadows, eddies and general mischief that cause one to become completely disoriented, becalmed and befuddled. The water un...
