About – Pomegranate Quilts
http://pomegranatequilts.com/about
Trip Around the World. Needle, Thread, Scissors, Thimble. I’ve been creating quilts since 1996, first in Ireland and since 2007 in Granada, Spain. Almost from the beginning I dyed my own fabrics. I like to make quilts using classic patterns but with a contemporary feel due to their colour. I often use recyled cloth to find unusual prints. My aim is to make something unique, beautiful and functional. Theme by: Theme Horse.
Trip Around the World – Pomegranate Quilts

Trip Around the World. Needle, Thread, Scissors, Thimble. Trip Around the World. This series began in February 2011. A picture of a 1930’s Trip Around The World (Jewell Willoughby, Kentucky) caught my eye. It was an obvious pattern for hand piecing but I had no idea how to machine piece one. The internet didn’t come up with any solutions so I sat down and worked out my own and the first quilt was made. I currently teach workshops based on my unique construction of this classic pattern.

Needle, Thread, Scissors, Thimble: July 2013
http://rachelwquilts.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 30 July 2013. Last week I was hand dyeing. I've been dyeing fabric for years and probably all of my quilts have my own fabric in them somewhere. Some of my quilts are all hand dyes. Birds of Paradise, 2005. The Trip Around the World series had lots of rounds of hand dyed squares. The occasional gaps in the colour made me think of them as little bits of sunshine coming through the clouds. They were an intrinsic part in making all of these quilts alive and interesting. I spent the initial years me...

Pomegranate Colours: May 2015
http://pomegranatecolours.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 13 May 2015. First attempts with wild madder. I haven't dyed with madder before and even though I'm growing a plant - see a picture of it in the previous post - I won't be harvesting it for at least another year. However we managed to find wild madder, rubia peregrina, growing up the walls as a weed next to the mangos in the plot where we grow vegetables. Rubia peregrina creciendo en la huerta aquí en Almuñécar. Las raíces cortadas secándose. The silk came out a beautiful soft coral and so did...
Needle, Thread, Scissors, Thimble: January 2013
http://rachelwquilts.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Sunday, 6 January 2013. Needle, thread, we're off! I've just spent Christmas with my family and I've spent it quilting – two activities which aren't usually synonomous. For most of us quilting entails closeting ourselves away and for those of you who use the dining-room table, Christmas is one of the few weeks when you gracefully concede that its original use is for dining. Luckily that Christmas I bemoaned my predicament to two experienced quilters who politely heard me out and then said "But you don't ...
Needle, Thread, Scissors, Thimble: January 2014

Sunday, 19 January 2014. Last weekend I spent making felt. It's been in preparation since the Autumn. I've been experimenting with natural dyes - pomegranates, fig leaves, onion skins, cochineal - all ingredients which I can find locally. Experiments on cotton were very disappointing so I switched to wool. In November, whilst in Ireland, I picked up two fleeces; one from Evelyn Shannon and a beautiful Jacob's fleece from her neighbour in County Wicklow. It took three days. Out on the terraza. It's re...
Needle, Thread, Scissors, Thimble: Still not convinced about Big Stitch Quilting?
http://rachelwquilts.blogspot.com/2014/10/still-not-convinced-about-big-stitch.html
Monday, 13 October 2014. Still not convinced about Big Stitch Quilting? Well my very first blog post was about big stitch hand quilting and I still have a feeling that not many of you are convinced. If you look carefully you can see the Big Stitching on all of these quilts. I am completely convinced that this is the way to get your quilts finished. Here's some recent stitching on indigo dyeing. This is the centre of this quilt where the chevron design from both sides meets. The trick is to keep your need...

Sunday, 12 May 2013. Diary of a Revolution Sampler - The End. Well, it's actually May 12 - a happy coincidence - and the Revolution Sampler is finished. Really it was finished two weeks ago, and it immediately travelled with me to Ireland, I only got around to posting this today. It's finished but I'm not sure if it is. So that's it. Not the end at all just the first step. And for those of you who are actually reading, here are some inspiring words from Howard Zinn which I read whilst sitting in Malaga a...
Needle, Thread, Scissors, Thimble: March 2014
http://rachelwquilts.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Saturday, 15 March 2014. Today for the first time ever I got blue dye from a plant. I'm thrilled. I live on what's called the Tropical Coast, the local commercial crops are mangos, avocados and custard apples. I sowed the seed last August and in January we planted the plants out on a terrace of mango trees. This week we reckoned there were enough leaves big enough to try - even though normally woad is harvested in Northern Europe during the summer. So first thing this morning off I went to pick the leaves.
