As early as the late 1700's records indicate the presence of a tavern and meetinghouse in the village. The arrival of the South Side Railway in 1854, made the area a vital hub for the surrounding smaller communities. In the closing hours of the American Civil War, Federal troops camped in the village in the area of the Prospect Methodist Church.
