Kennedy through Executive Order 10924 on March 1, 1961. The order was quickly approved by Congress and the first Volunteers began their service in Ghana on August 30th of that year. The Peace Corps program further expanded in 1996 with the creation of Peace Corps Response and today over 9,000 Volunteers and Trainees serve in more than 70 countries.
