WhiteBoard Coder: AWS Servers
http://www.whiteboardcoder.com/p/aws-servers.html
I have been using AWS servers since 2010 for clients. I think they are a great, if not the greatest, cloud solutions on the market right now. 1 year subscription. expires 01/31/2015). I keep the T1.micro server around to run one simple client web site (very non-important) and to run an offsite git remote repository. I am thinking about mounting an s3 folder as my remote git/rsync drive for more robust offsite backups. Great service I highly recommend it. I spend approximately $7.50 a month for a T1&#...

WhiteBoard Coder: Pair Programming
http://www.whiteboardcoder.com/p/paired-programming.html
Learn the art of pair programming. Here is a short history of my feelings towards Pair Programming. (Keep in mind I love to work with people I don't prefer to work in a cave alone). Two guys and one shovel between them to do the work? Of course two guys with one shovel will get more done than one guy with one shovel in 8 Hours, but they will not get as much work done as Two guys who each have their own shovel. It has some value. It is absolutely worth doing a portion of the time . Newer programmers becom...

Install ffmpeg on Ubuntu 14.04. Saturday, July 4, 2015. Ffmpeg is a great command line tool for converting videos and audio files from one format to another. https:/ www.ffmpeg.org/about.html. In this tutorial I will be going over how to install it in Ubuntu 14.04. Why should there even be a tutorial on how to install this? Shouldn't it be just something like "sudo apt-get install ffmpeg"? I am sure someone can answer this better than I, but here is my naive take on it…. 2] Go there if you want complete ...

WhiteBoard Coder: Sensu Epic

My goal is to just really figure out how to use Sensu. Some of the TODOs on my list are. Send message securely between Sensu Master and Clients. Set up a Sensu HA system (more than one master). Wednesday, August 12, 2015. I am going through a great book right now. It's a collection of write ups on Extreme Programming from 2002. A lot of them are very practical and have some great ideas on how to do XP or to introduce it to a team. One I thought a valuable read was talking about "Mob" Programming. The article is only 5 pages… go ahead and read it J. Mob" programming is pretty much what it sounds like… You get your Dev team in a room and you… the mob… refactor some code…. Teaching the Team XP.

WhiteBoard Coder: Twilio and Pagerduty
http://www.whiteboardcoder.com/p/twilio-and-pagerduty.html
Set up a phone number, via twillio, that when called will set off a pagerduty event. Pagerduty, as far as I can tell, does not offer a single call in number. I need a single emergency phone number that I can hand out to key people. In the event of an emergency they only have one number to call to get a hold of the on-call engineer. I figured out how to do it! The first post of this epic shows simply how to set up pager duty (and use your free 30 day trial). Another person set up our pagerduty and twilio ...
