Notes from the Home Front

Notes from the Home Front. Friday, October 28, 2011. How do you get your kids interested in important stuff? A friend wanted to know. "I take my kids to museums, to shows and on all kinds of field trips, and they just act bored.". It's something we'd all like to know. But when we try to force the issue, I think it often backfires on us. I don't know that my kids will ever have the same passion for history that I do, or if they will love the same music that makes me happy. But when we all respect- and...

Notes from the Home Front: August 2010

http://www.notesfromthehomefrontttk.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Notes from the Home Front. Friday, August 27, 2010. My favorite time of year! Not too many years ago, this was the most depressing time of the year for me. While most of the other parents were rejoicing in the new school year, I was mourning. I hated sending my kids back to school, hated having to get back into an artificial schedule dictated by the school. . hated losing my kids again after a summer of fun. But now I love this time of year! The best thing is that we get to do it together. This year, I m...

Notes from the Home Front. Friday, July 30, 2010. The Language of Home. What language does your home speak? I'm not talking about the people in your house. . .I'm talking about the house itself. My sister and I were recently remembering one of my mom's friends. When we were kids, we'd visit this lady, and it wasn't a fun time. Her home was a show place: the carpets were pristine, the walls perfectly painted, the furniture like new. It was very uncomfortable. So what does your house say? When I was a newl...

Notes from the Home Front: Family Lingo

Notes from the Home Front. Sunday, July 24, 2011. I don't remember that pastor or even how old I was, but that comment has stuck with our family! Isn't it funny how each family has its own lingo? I'll bet you can think of a few phrases which wouldn't have any meaning to someone outside your family, but which when used, evoke a very exact image in your mind. Now that we have a new family member, it's been fun to introduce him to some of our language. It makes him part of us. View my complete profile.

Notes from the Home Front. Wednesday, May 18, 2011. I Could Be Angry, Too. Recently, I read a blog written by Greta Christina; it was linked on Facebook, and something in the description caught my eye. I don't know much about her, but from what I can tell, she is an atheist. And apparently today (or whenever she wrote this), she is an angry atheist. (Her description, not mine.). But there's nothing to stop me from talking about it here, on my own platform! I was hurt, too, by the people who chose to post...

Kandle Kronicles: June

http://kandlekronicles.blogspot.com/2012/06/june.html

Sunday, June 10, 2012. I just wanted to thank all of you for your notes, email and prayers during what is always a difficult week for us. Robyn and I dread the first week of June every year. It brings back some very sad memories. The rest of the year, it's easy to concentrate on remembering the good times, of which there were many. This year marked five years for my mom, six for Daddy. We placed flowers on the altar at church in their memory last Sunday. Thanks and love to you all. Other Blogs by Tawdra.

MOB: Real-life Tales from a Mother of the Bride: Sleepless Nights!

http://tawdra-motherofthebride.blogspot.com/2011/05/sleepless-nights.html

MOB: Real-life Tales from a Mother of the Bride. Tuesday, May 17, 2011. I kinda-sorta remember my own bridal days. It was 24 years ago, so it might be a little hazy, but I really don't recall losing any sleep over the whole event. I think I probably slept the sleep of the young and clueless, happily expecting that it would all magically just work out. (It did, but I am thinking it might not have been so magically! For instance, it's a little after 7 AM. I've been up since. . .oh, four? I'm not nervous ab...

Miles to Go: Five years ago

http://robynsmilestogo.blogspot.com/2013/02/five-years-ago.html

Musings from a mom on the run. Thursday, February 7, 2013. I couldn't run around the block. It was five years ago that I first tried to run, and failed - sort of. I failed to run as far I thought I could run or as fast as I thought I could run. But what I didn't know was that day when I laced up my sneakers and started jogging up the street, I was starting a whole new chapter in my life. But I did it. Every day I'd run a little further. I was too afraid to run on the road outside the confines of ...One d...

Musings from a mom on the run. Monday, March 25, 2013. A mile in my shoes. When I close my eyes to go to sleep, all I can see is my baby, trapped in freezing cold mud up to his chest, scared, and crying. And I wonder what he was thinking. Kaden is 9 years old. He’s a determined little dude, and he always has been. When he wants to do something, he will figure out a way to do it. And on Saturday, I guess he wanted to take a trip into the wetlands behind our house. I will also mention here that he has esca...

Miles to Go: January 2013

http://robynsmilestogo.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Musings from a mom on the run. Sunday, January 27, 2013. Looking back, looking ahead. 2013 Yup, we are almost a full month into the new year and I'm finally sitting down to write my first blog of the year. This is a big year for me. I will celebrate my 40th birthday in May. I'll become the mother of a teenager in November. I'm looking forward to a fabulous week-long trip to Disney World in February with my family to run my 5th Princess Half Marathon. More joy, less guilt. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Miles to Go: Race Report from Ironman Princeton 70.3

http://robynsmilestogo.blogspot.com/2014/09/race-report-from-ironman-princeton-703.html

Musings from a mom on the run. Monday, September 29, 2014. Race Report from Ironman Princeton 70.3. My Journey to 70.3. Then in December of 2013, the news came out that an Ironman-branded 70.3 event was coming to Princeton, NJ. It was going to be held in Mercer County Park, the same location as the New Jersey State Triathlon, and a location I love. The water is clean-ish or at least seaweed-free, the roads are fairly flat, and it is an hour drive from home. Training guide and planned my weeks of training...

http://tawdra-motherofthebride.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

MOB: Real-life Tales from a Mother of the Bride. Tuesday, October 26, 2010. We have a dee jay! So we had two milestones this past weekend. First, we attended our first bridal show; second, we booked the dee jay for the wedding. Offsetting the weird brides was a pair of children dressed for a wedding party. They were adorable as they distributed booklets of information and ads to each person entering. The breakfast area of the hotel housed the first set of vendors. There was a caterer serving food, a ...

MOB: Real-life Tales from a Mother of the Bride. Sunday, June 12, 2011. With A Little Help from Our Friends. Planning a wedding, even a small or low-key affair, is not for the faint of heart. Implementing those plans shouldn't be a solo gig. That's why wedding planners and consultants are so popular. How nice to make the choices and know that someone else is in charge of making them happen! But what's even better is having wonderful friends who help to make things run smoothly. One of the hardest lessons...

http://tawdra-motherofthebride.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

MOB: Real-life Tales from a Mother of the Bride. Thursday, September 1, 2011. Memories of the Big Day. Can you believe it's almost three months since the wedding? We have the wedding pictures now, and I have a few to put up here. (If you're friends with me on Facebook, you can see the others.) When we sit and look at the pictures, we remember all the best parts of that day. And it's sweet. After all, if the bride and groom end the day married, everything is perfect. MOB: Real-life Tales from a Mother of the Bride. Sunday, June 12, 2011. T Minus SIX DAYS! I have been so remiss about updating my blogs. . hmm, I wonder why? Could it be that the month before a wedding is really as crazy as everyone has warned me? Well, yes and no. The truth is that we have been running around and doing wedding related stuff many days, but we've also been having fun! So where do we stand at this point, less than a week before the wedding? Someone said to me a few weeks ago, "I hope that ...

Notes from the Holler

August 3, 2015. Until I looked at the eggs he'd brought in and realized that we did, indeed, have a new layer. When a hen first starts laying, the eggs are smaller. They gradually increase in size until they reach their max size after a few months. And one of the eggs was definitely smaller than the others. It was even more clear when I cracked them for my morning omelette. Kieran went out the other day to check on them and decided to play tag with them. "Tag, you're it! The Lady of the Holler. But here's the thing: the overall effect of hearing Dylan's current show, these sad ballads, balanced with fierce and playful rock and roll, is to make the listener feel poignantly, wonderfully alive. Salt Lake City was my 50. Would you expect to understand Lessing or Ishiguro or Neruda, having read only one book out of twenty? After “Things Have Changed,” perfo...But it ai...
