Monday, October 29, 2012. Leucism.who knew it was contagious? These two showed up today. About leucism and albinism from Cornell. Links to this post. Labels: Acanthis flammea flammea. Sunday, October 28, 2012. Finches on the move! I didn't cross paths with any megas but I was awed by the tide of Common Redpoll. Smaller flocks of White-winged Crossbill. Were also conspicuous this morning. The flock of nine Bohemian Waxwings. And two Northern Shrikes. Passing by Hawks Ridge. Links to this post. Of late som...

North Shore Nature: A moment to appreciate the Pine Grosbeak

http://northshorenature.blogspot.com/2012/11/a-moment-to-appreciate-pine-grosbeak.html

Saturday, November 10, 2012. A moment to appreciate the Pine Grosbeak. There's a decent movement of Pine Grosbeaks. Along the north shore this week. We have a dozen or so visting our feeders. Along the Lake Superior coast, they can be seen and heard flying northwest on most days. Last year we had a bumper crop of Mountain-Ash fruit and we enjoyed an abundance. Remain here for the winter. Friday, November 9, 2012. Summary of the 2012 North Shore Round-up. Once again Nick Escott and the Thunder Bay Field Naturalists coordinated the autumn bird round-up. Six parties spent at least part of Saturday (Nov 3) or Sunday (Nov 4) counting birds between Thunder Bay and Manitouwadge. Martha and I covered the Lake Superior coast between Rossport and Marathon. Was a good sighting in Nipigon. Many thanks to all who participated. Here's the tally, posted per Nick's request. November 9, 2012 at 7:53 PM.

North Shore Nature: "Hornemann's" Hoary and "Greater" Common Redpolls

http://northshorenature.blogspot.com/2011/01/hornemanns-hoary-and-greater-common.html

Monday, January 10, 2011. Hornemann's" Hoary and "Greater" Common Redpolls. During the December 19th CBC. We tallied a total of only eight Common Redpolls. At two different feeders. Since then the redpoll scene has become more interesting. As noted in my last post. The backyard flock has grown and at times Hoary Redpolls. Appear to outnumber Common Redpolls. A few days ago an unusual male Hoary Redpoll. Showed up in the late afternoon. It was much larger than the abundant Common Redpolls. Here are a few ...

Saturday, June 14, 2014. The Wren House and a New Yard Herp. Dekay's Brownsnake (Storia dekayi). Hannah was seeing a Brownsnake in the garden a few mornings in a row, which is a new snake for our yard bringing the total number of snake species to two. Above is a distribution map from the Ontario Reptile and Amphibian Atlas. Showing that Dekay's Brownsnake is unevenly distributed within southern Ontario. I was only able to get one decent photo of a butterfly in Jamaica. Malachite ( Siproeta stelenes.

Saturday, October 19, 2013. The Evacuation of the Great White North - La Evacuación del Norte. Fall is a busy season in the Northwoods for all forms of life. Wednesday, March 5, 2014. Little Red Riding Wolf. I was on the road to the sea, helping my friends Brian and Kate of Seabirding. Spot on some of their trips off the Outer Banks. I parked my car along some fields where the birds were hanging out and I climbed on top of it (couldn't do this with the Altima! To get a better view. There were several harriers tacking around in the fields, and some patience was necessary to wait out the owls. Started singing behind the car and a Woodcock. I noticed some moveme...

Tuesday, October 30, 2012. Party in the North and Banding the Boreal. Before I left for the tropics, I made it a goal to see some "winter" birds that Ontarians see usually only in the cold months of the year, before I left. And, of course, to party. The Northwoods' hardwood trees have almost all lost their leaves but this does not mean there is no color to be seen. The Tamarack, a deciduous conifer, blazes a beautiful golden-yellow, which has replaced the reds and oranges of the hardwoods in Algonquin.

Sunday, February 15, 2015. Other Florida Specialties 2015. Here are some more feathered Floridians! Mottled Duck (rear) with feral Mallard (front). Update: after reviewing the timely article on eBird found here. The putative Mottled Duck above actually shows some indications of a mixed genealogy. In particular, the extensive streaking in the cheek together with the appearance of white edging in the tail feathers suggests some unknown degree of Mallard ancestry. The geographical range of the Limpkin inclu...

Saturday, March 7, 2015. Getting Out of Dodge. During our recent visit to Florida, we encountered a banded Piping Plover at Howard Park near Tarpon Springs. Hannah immediately recorded the colour band combination in her notebook, and later I was able to obtain a photograph. The upper left leg has a metal USGS numbered band. The lower left leg has an orange auxiliary band over a black band. The lower right leg has two green bands, and the upper right leg has a light blue "flag". Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
