Saturday, November 10, 2012. A moment to appreciate the Pine Grosbeak. There's a decent movement of Pine Grosbeaks. Along the north shore this week. We have a dozen or so visting our feeders. Along the Lake Superior coast, they can be seen and heard flying northwest on most days. Last year we had a bumper crop of Mountain-Ash fruit and we enjoyed an abundance. Remain here for the winter. Friday, November 9, 2012. Summary of the 2012 North Shore Round-up. Once again Nick Escott and the Thunder Bay Field Naturalists coordinated the autumn bird round-up. Six parties spent at least part of Saturday (Nov 3) or Sunday (Nov 4) counting birds between Thunder Bay and Manitouwadge. Martha and I covered the Lake Superior coast between Rossport and Marathon. Saturday, June 14, 2014. The Wren House and a New Yard Herp. Dekay's Brownsnake (Storia dekayi). Hannah was seeing a Brownsnake in the garden a few mornings in a row, which is a new snake for our yard bringing the total number of snake species to two. Above is a distribution map from the Ontario Reptile and Amphibian Atlas. Showing that Dekay's Brownsnake is unevenly distributed within southern Ontario. Before I left for the tropics, I made it a goal to see some "winter" birds that Ontarians see usually only in the cold months of the year, before I left. And, of course, to party. The Northwoods' hardwood trees have almost all lost their leaves but this does not mean there is no color to be seen. The Tamarack, a deciduous conifer, blazes a beautiful golden-yellow, which has replaced the reds and oranges of the hardwoods in Algonquin.

Saturday, March 7, 2015. Getting Out of Dodge. During our recent visit to Florida, we encountered a banded Piping Plover at Howard Park near Tarpon Springs. Hannah immediately recorded the colour band combination in her notebook, and later I was able to obtain a photograph. The upper left leg has a metal USGS numbered band.
