So, who am I? A retired medical academic, specialising in public health and within that health policy, the epidemiology of ageing, editing and teaching. Oh, and I sat on one of the NICE Appraisal Committees for many years. It was wonderful, despite the hate mail; or should that be Daily Mail? It was the only committee, NHS or elsewhere that I have attended where there was an equal mix of men and women, and I felt I learned a huge amount at every meeting. So where does the NHS fit with public health?

Why do we need health services? People seem to value health services. There are lots of suggestions about what they are for. The one I like best is by Nye Bevan, though he was an old devil and caused some awful problems. Some of them will come home to roost if the GPs really are put in charge of the NHS (in England). And an obsession of mine: why do we have hospitals? What is the NHS for? The Five Giants, by Nicholas Timmins. Yet what more important function than to relieve fear? Why do we have hospitals.

This section has three supplements ordered by year; garden, music and travel supplements. These are my main preoccupations. The carrot is an aspiration. No chance that I could grow one. But one day. maybe. The Government have passed a bill making General Practitioners the lead professionals in purchasing the services run by the NHS. The government believe that GPs know what patients want. But do they know what they need.
