Fort Sumner/Bosque Redondo Memorial. Fort Sumner Historic Site/Bosque Redondo Memorial. The center of a million-acre reservation known as the Bosque Redondo, this site represents one of the most tragic periods in American history. The Mescalero were the first to be subdued and brought to Bosque Redondo early in 1863. They had been promised that if the moved to Bosque Redondo and behaved, they would soon be allowed to go home. Negotiations with the Indians resulted in the Treaty of 1868 signed on June 1.
