About – Mirkwood

https://mirkwood.wordpress.com/about

I am a research scientist living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. I like to believe that I know a little bit of signal processing and applied cryptography, but experience challenges this view almost every day. I have lived in several cities, but I miss, most of all, the little town of Cambridge, Massachusetts, where I spent six lonely but productive years. I used to write about these things oftener than I do now, and I hope to return the blog to some semblance of fluidity in the coming months.

Feeder Tales, Part 2: First visitors. We put up our feeder. On the third morning, a chestnut-backed chickadee. During the second week, one of the chickadees enlisted a new companion for his trips from the birch to the feeder and back – an Oregon Junco. The feeder’s most voracious and messy visitors – a group of house finches. March 2, 2015. July 3, 2015. Leave a comment on Feeder Tales, Part 2: First visitors. Feeder Tales, Part 1: For a Junco. Farewell, Leonard Nimoy. – Mirkwood

https://mirkwood.wordpress.com/2015/03/09/farewell-leonard-nimoy

Farewell, Leonard Nimoy. I am what I am, Leila. And if there are self-made purgatories, then we all have to live in them. Mine can be no worse than someone else’s. [Mr. Spock, This Side of Paradise]. Being someone who grew up wanting to be a pilot and astronomer before reality intervened, Star Trek was never just another TV series to me. And Spock was never just another character. Thank you Leonard, for embodying the Vulcan quest for logic, rationality, and (above all), for stoicism. March 9, 2015.

Voracious Reader: July 2006

http://allthosebooks.blogspot.com/2006_07_01_archive.html

Book reviews, raves and other media musings. 26 July, 2006. Digging to America (Anne Tyler). I don't think I'm explaining myself terribly well. If you like Tyler, I'm sure you'll enjoy Digging to America. If you've never read her before, I'd probably pick one of her novels to begin with; my favourite of her books so far has been Saint Maybe. This is the second boarding school related book I've read this week - the first was the delightfully creepy A Great and Terrible Beauty. Despite this, Prep. Contains...

Voracious Reader: Quaker Faith & Practice and This We Can Say

http://allthosebooks.blogspot.com/2007/01/quaker-faith-practice-and-this-we-can.html

Book reviews, raves and other media musings. 09 January, 2007. Quaker Faith and Practice and This We Can Say. I picked up these two books, created by the Yearly Meetings of the British and Australian organisations of the Religious Society of Friends (otherwise known as Quakers) when I started to become very interested in Quaker writing on the web. Of the two, I think I preferred. This We Can Say. The Australian book. It was less traditional, I think, than. Quaker Faith and Practice. This We Can Say.

Ian's Blog II: Staphylococcus Redux (part 2)

http://iansblog2.blogspot.com/2008/08/staphylococcus-redux-part-2.html

Sunday, August 24, 2008. Staphylococcus Redux (part 2). This was obviously what this couple were up to. I told them of my situation, but they were fixated on their gathering. They told us they could take us a few miles up the road, but they would be travelling in another direction once we reached that point. Fine, I thought, a few miles was better than nothing. She took a studied look at my foot and determined that if I didn’t get to a hospital that day my foot would be gangrenous by morning. I...I rathe...

Ian's Blog II: December 2007

http://iansblog2.blogspot.com/2007_12_01_archive.html

Monday, December 17, 2007. My score on The Which Spice Are You Test. You scored 50% intoxication, 50% hotness, 100% complexity, and 25% craziness! Http:/ panther.is0.okcimg.com/users/434/744/4357457111978303249/mt845783353.jpg. You're a cool cat. Crisp, clean, fresh, and extremely complicated. You're like quantum physics or modern jazz. Think Niels Bohr meets Ornette Coleman. You may look normal now, but once you sprout, you look kind of, uh, funny. Link: The Which Spice Are You Test. Shoot out the Lights.

Ian's Blog II: April 2008

Sunday, April 27, 2008. Here is a quick recap of last week’s events. Things are moving along with lots of choices and things to do, and, meanwhile, spring has sprung! I broke two necessary household appliances in a matter of two hours. First was the washing machine. I loaded an extremely large comforter (seriously, this thing is too large for a king-sized bed—do they make emperor-sized beds? I read two very powerful graphic novels/comics this week. Sunday, November 16, 2008. New Blog is Up! On December 9th I'll be headed to South Africa. One of the goals of the trip is to keep an on-line journal of my five week trip, so I've started a new blog. And I plan to do preliminary posts soon. There are no formal posts yet, but if you click on the about tab you'll get an intro about the trip and some very good links. Well, blogspot has its merits too, after all it's the provider who got me started blogging in the first place. As for Ian's Blog II? The Colum...

Last Chance to See. Is known and loved for the satirical and insane stories that make up the. Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I loved reading that trilogy in four parts during my high school and college years, but didn’t wonder until much later about what other books Adams had written in his short life, or indeed what his interests were. Around the year 2005, a dear friend talked to me about one such “other book”, a strange travelogue called. Last Chance to See. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

Mirkwood Designs - Adventures in Creativity!

Monday, May 6, 2013. 161;Feliz el Seis de Mayo! I had planned to make our little fiesta Mexicano yesterday, but time got away from me. So today I made tacos for our late lunch. The recipe for the meat and the guacamole is from America's Test Kitchen/Cook's Illustrated, and the salsa is a Taco Bell copycat recipe I found online. The dish is displayed on my Mexican-themed quilt, "Dia de los Animales.". In other news, I am nearly finished hand piecing my Dear Jane quilt - just a few border triangles to go!
