December 7, 1941. I feared for the worse, and it was not long before it all started. First to come was the curfew for all people of Japanese blood, be they citizens or otherwise. Next came travel restrictions. We could move around only in a limited restricted area. That did not affect me too much because most of my work was within the boundary. Before Pearl Harbor, Mack Mayeda and his brother lived in a boarding house in West Los Angeles and worked as a gardener. Taking home more than one hundred fifty dollars a month, he was earning more than some of his friends in the retail produce business. Two months later, Mayeda received Executive Order No. 9066. Was born in Los Angeles, California, and grew up on strawberry farms in various areas of Los Angeles and Orange Counties. He graduated from Excelsior High School and then went to Japan to continue his studies while Japan was at war with China. He was able to return to the United States before World War II was declared, only to be incarcerated at the concentration camp at Manzanar from 1942 to 1945 because of his Japanese ancestry. All who were incarcerated were uniquely affected.
