little herban homestead: Chickens!

http://littleherbanhomestead.blogspot.com/2011/04/chickens.html

Thursday, April 7, 2011. Thanks to Mary who blogs at http:/ columbiaurbanhens.wordpress.com/. I will be ordering our hens through Bourne feed who gets their shipments from http:/ www.cacklehatchery.com. A hatchery in southern Missouri. All the images below are from Cackle Hatchery. I am most excited about the Black Australorp hens! I love the silky black feathers that look iridescent in the sunlight. These are also considered above average layers with about 5 eggs per week, very calm and docile and c...

little herban homestead: Agrimony

http://littleherbanhomestead.blogspot.com/2011/03/agrimony.html

Wednesday, March 30, 2011. There is such an enormous amount of information to share about plants that I had a difficult time discerning what to include and what not to for the first plant profile. Primarily, I decided to focus on what I know most about the plant and some of my thoughts on how I think about using herbal medicine. Let me know your thoughts! Especially share what you would like to know more or less of in future plant profiles! Slightly bitter, astringent, warm. On with with Agrimony. Along ...

Our Barred Rock, Miss Fritz and Jade our white Silkie Bantam. May 23, 2011 at 2:31 PM. You are so inspirational! Along ...

little herban homestead: Chicken Coop Progress

http://littleherbanhomestead.blogspot.com/2011/05/chicken-coop-progress.html

Friday, May 6, 2011. The chicken coop is nearly finished! Violet and I chose to paint it something fun and unusual. We used recycle hardware, wood, windows, hardware cloth, and re-purposed an old steel sign for the roof. We purchased the siding and the wood for the chicken run which should be built this weekend. Violet painted the main body of the coop. She had fun but she doesn't look like it here:. Finished coop pics and official pictorial tour coming soon! May 8, 2011 at 4:56 PM. Follow us on Facebook.

little herban homestead: No-Till Keyhole Garden Bed

http://littleherbanhomestead.blogspot.com/2011/05/no-till-keyhole-garden-bed.html

Thursday, May 5, 2011. No-Till Keyhole Garden Bed. I am creating a series of keyhole beds that will loosely resemble a mandala garden when I'm finished. I take my time and build only about 1 or 2 keyhole beds a year. Here's how I do it:. Hose, stick, tape measure, string and scissors. Build your keyhole garden you will need the following:. Flexible hose or suitable substitute for laying out bed. A stick, pipe or pole to place in the center of the circle. String to tie to the pole. String tied to pole.

cake and cup: May 2011

http://cakeandcup.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

For anyone wondering about the project I was rambling on about in the last post. Here are the long and short of it. The long: a book. The short: writing every day. The dream that I have is to write. It is also the very core of who I am, though I think I've been in denial for most of my life. As a child, I loved writing. I tore off covers of books and filled them with stories of fairies, forests, and so on. I wrote about world peace! What are you unearthing these days? Links to this post. So much of what ...

cake and cup: February 2011

http://cakeandcup.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

I've been quiet here lately, but I'm just enjoying life and working out some thoughts. The weather is slowly warming up and the days are becoming brighter. I've never been a fan of Valentine's Day, but I'm beginning to warm up to it. After all, between a husband who surprises me with flowers and my favorite dark mint chocolate and my two tiny valentines, what's not to love? Links to this post. Here's a great article. About the disease in general. And here's a wonderful one. Links to this post.

cake and cup: heart of writing

http://cakeandcup.blogspot.com/2011/10/heart-of-writing.html

Writing practice knows this, knows we are not our thoughts, but lets the thoughts, visions, emotions run through us and puts them on the page. Writing is the crack through which you can crawl into a bigger world, into your wild mind." -Natalie Goldberg. What sorts of treasures are you enjoying these days? This fabulous, cool, good-smelling weather is the BEST! Enjoy your walks with your littles before theyre old enough to zoom off ahead of you on their big bikes with their hair flowing out behind them.

cake and cup: in my mind's eye

http://cakeandcup.blogspot.com/2011/11/in-my-minds-eye.html

In my mind's eye. Blog: "Write your first draft with your heart. Rewrite with your head," from Finding Forrester. In my life, I strive to be in the moment, and to soak up the details around me, as they work like mental compost to eventually enrich my writing. Also, as cooler weather sets in, I start needing to bake. Thus the cookies begin to be a staple on my counter top. Soon it will be pies, and apple cake. What's your favorite fall treat? cake and cup: a little break

http://cakeandcup.blogspot.com/2011/09/little-break.html

A break, a vacation, is just what a person needs sometimes. I took a vacation when my mom and brother flew in, and we went, with the kids, to the beach together. It was wonderful! I also took a break from any sort of writing, which felt good at first, but now I feel malnourished. The most exciting news of this week is Finn's third birthday, coming right up on Thursday. He has requested a strawberry cake, so I am on the hunt for the perfect recipe. Are you taking a little break from anything? I hope your ...

cake and cup: April 2011

http://cakeandcup.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

The life I want. My neighbor Sara and her partner went to help with chainsaws the next day, and left their kids with me. Another friend. Whose house was blessedly left standing but who had 8 trees in her yard fall, also dropped her kids off with me that day. I spent all day playing with six kids, making sandwiches, putting babies down for naps, and generally enjoying myself. As the day ended and the kids cleared out, Josh and his boys came into town. Links to this post. Moss and smooth stones. Easter was...

cake and cup: big news

http://cakeandcup.blogspot.com/2011/08/big-news.html

The summer days are slipping by. This morning the air was cooler, and a breeze flipped the leaves of the trees back and forth, waving hello. I have been busy learning a new city. Atlanta is not completely new to me, I spent twelve years of my life living just outside of Atlanta, in various suburbs. Living in the city, though, is different. It is still easy for me to get turned around as I try to find my way about town. Did I already express how much I love it here? Here is the big news as of late. I scop...

cake and cup: June 2011

http://cakeandcup.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

I normally don't share writing from my journal, but this is an exception. My friend was senselessly murdered by strangers (and mere kids, at that) several years ago. It was in late summer, and so every year as the heat rises, so do memories of this friend. I can think only of him lately, so that's what I've been writing about, too. Links to this post. I can't quite believe it. I am looking forward to the change, and to living just one mile from my best friend; Jamie. What's growing rampantly in your life?

littleherbal | just a gal blogging about herbs and health

Just a gal blogging about herbs and health. February 11, 2012. Well all my lovely readers, it’s time for me to change. I have had 3 blogs now for quite some time. Each one specific to different parts of my life. It has become way too hard to manage 3 blogs so I’ve decided to combine them all together into one blog. I will eventually be deleting this blog. January 3, 2012. I personally love Mountain Rose Herbs. For a chance to win an amazing prize! Let them know that I sent you. 🙂. December 15, 2011.

We also went to the floral hall where some of the displays made me feel like if I was in a botanic garden. Finally I bought some second hand books about plants and gardens and Venus Flytrap. We called our little carnivorous plant Adela after the plant in a 1977 Czechoslovak comedy detective film Adéla ještě nevečeřela. Adela hasn’t had her dinner yet). I also wanted to give my friends some gastronomic experience, so apart from the food creations I made for them, we had irresistible scones with jam and cl...
