In order to attend the Velo City international bicycle advocacy conference in Adelaide, Simon and I decided to catch a train to Swan Hill and ride through the Mallee to get to Adelaide. Saturday, June 25, 2011. Cairns to Cooktown to Cairns (via Mareeba). Monday 13th June 2011. Unfortunately, according to a sign on the side of the road, I had missed the " Festival of the Knob. At Yorkeys Knob which was the previous Saturday. The view from Rex's lookout. We spotted two saltwater crocodiles of medium size on a muddy bank as we rode across the Mowbray bridge, and there were some people trying to catch mudcrabs on the old bridge there. Tuesday, July 28, 2015. A range of emotions. Next morning we continued to follow the mountain bike trail, which gets you back onto sealed backroads for a very early lunch in Lobethal, then roads and tracks of varying surface and rural scenes to Birdwood for afternoon without too much climbing hills. We rode on and managed to find a tiny bit of scrub to camp in amongst the "No camping" pine forest and pastural properties. Sun sinking into the Gulf St Vincent. Camp on the Mawson trail. A range of emotions.

Thursday, August 6, 2015. Emus, dust and wild flowers. Something caught my eye in amongst the conifers and so I rested my bike against a tree beside the road to follow my curiosity into the forest. A mob of twenty five emus were all gathered and didn't seem to mind my presence, so I watched them for a while, exasperated by their number, before riding on, further north into the Flinders Ranges.
