Not for the Squeamish: May 2010

Not for the Squeamish. I have long had a stance against licensed character merchandise for children. I did not like the idea before I had one and that hasn't changed after having G-man. In fact, I flat-out hate them for the baby/toddler set. On the small swim diaper? Winnie the Pooh on the teether. On a size 3 sandal? Why on earth are the majority of 1st birthday decorations Elmo or Dora or Disney? These kids aren't supposed to know who the characters are yet! If they do love. Elmo toys at friends homes ...

Not for the Squeamish. Thank you to everyone that submitted your sloth report. I understand that most of them were late, but given our status as champion lollygaggers, this is actually to be commended. Some highlights from the toddler section:. At the least, you should feign innocent curiosity and not move until you are allowed to touch something in the front. And then touch it again. And then have your adult touch it. Here's a great tip that recently came in: why move if you don't have to? In all, every...

Not for the Squeamish. News flash: two-olds are smart! Wait, you knew this already? Well, it's been a surprise to me. It's not like the G-man is a genius. I mean, he still hasn't figured out to get his jacket off if the hood is up. He just struggles as he tries to shimmy his arms out while his head snaps back snug in the hood. Mensa does not yet have us on speed dial. But I am still really amazed at how much kids his age know and learn. Am I the only one? He also knows when I've skipped a page in somethi...

Not for the Squeamish: Four-legged Bambino

Not for the Squeamish. After losing our 13-year-old cat to cancer in the fall of 2009, I wasn't prepared to be back at the vet's office in just over a year looking at another ominous x-ray, this time for our dalmatian, Tino. I was a SAHM. I was hooked. A late 2-year-old/early 3-year-old doesn't really grasp death, but when I think about it, what more does a 37-year-old like me need to know other than our loved one is not actually coming back? They say that when pets die, they go to the Rainbow Bridge whe...

Not for the Squeamish. Choosy moms choose margaritas. There are times I give him choices - eggs or oatmeal? And times I leave it open - what do you want for breakfast? If he has input, he's been eating more. However, food consumption and meal cooperation seem to have a direct correlation with when his choice is made and when the food appears. Ask him about dinner at 4:30 and serve it at 5:15? Look out, calories may be consumed. What else was in your lunch today? Did you eat it? Why didn't you eat it?

Not for the Squeamish. I didn't want to say anything before because I might jinx it, but the G-man is potty trained. It went surprising well. Almost too well? For starters, there was no drama. He hasn't had an accident yet. He accepted the new rule of going to the potty without question. He woke up one day, was told to use the potty and simply transitioned to a new world order without fanfare. Hooray, no more diapers! I'm supposed to be jumping for joy, right? That's like blasphemous, right? 160; .

Not for the Squeamish. Page 63 of the Toddler manual. Ask your mommy for milk. No, juice. No, milk. Ummm.what? Milk No, milk. Let her get it out of the fridge, then declare you want to do it. This works best with a new gallon. Eventually "help" by placing one finger on the carton as she carries it over. After she starts pouring into the new cup, cry. Proclaim through tears that you want to do it "all by himself.". Expert level: get your mommy to pour it back in the carton to start over.). 160; . He was ...

Not for the Squeamish. You see, I've always been a little uncomfortable when I see little kids glued to their parents phones. Do they really need that? You'd be surprised at how many of the G-man's friends already know how to play games on these devices, know how to work the apps and beg for their favorite videos. They could have an adult conversation. Eat their food. Remain clean. And hold their heads up high upon departure. All things that elude our experiences right now. Or talk about their day? I hav...

Not for the Squeamish. Having the G-man born right before xmas. Is not what we planned, although at first on paper, it didn't really matter too much. Scott and I haven't done a real xmas. Celebration in years, choosing to focus on our anniversary that's just a few days later. So it seemed that a birthday on the 20 th. Just gave us something new to enjoy during the traditional holiday season. But kids have a way of changing plans and we realized last year that xmas. Story of the G-man's birth:. Unless the...
