Exponents begin their study of jo by learning a set of twelve basic techniques (kihon waza), which contain all of the styles essential movements. They then proceed through different sets of techniques of stick versus sword(s): omote, chudan, ran-ai, kage, samidare, gohon no midare, and okuden. A final set, the gokui hiden (also called go muso no jo), consists of techniques that are taught only to exponents who have received a menkyo kaiden, the highest level of license in the system. Kalligrafie, de moeder van alle kunsten. Kalligrafie wordt beschouwd als het hoogste der kunsten en wordt in het Japans sho do genoemd, de manier van het schrijven. Karakters worden ritmisch en in een penseelstreek geschreven: het is grafische muzikaliteit. De eenmaal op papier gezette lijn is niet meer te corrigeren. Kalligrafen oefenen zich in de beheersing van de vijf gangbare stijlen en in het navolgen van de voorbeelden van de grote schrijfmeesters uit vroegere eeuwen. De juiste houding is belangrijk.
