Number Talks – kendelcuriosity

November 14, 2015. November 21, 2015. I love Number Talks. I feel like they have completely changed my math instruction from decent to best practice. For years I have felt like math was my weakness, both as a person and a teacher. Because I never truly understood it myself, I was teaching it the way I had learned it and not the way I SHOULD have learned it. To any teacher who has tried a few Number Talks and feels like they’re not working, I would beg them to continue to try it! What do you notice? Readi...

Which One Doesn’t Belong…Forcing Kids to Think! August 24, 2015. I explored several websites about math, and I particularly liked two of them. The other, my personal favorite, is Which One Doesn’t Belong. It really forces kids to think! I love that there is not one correct answer; what matters is how you justify your thinking. Isn’t that exactly what we want kids to do? Math Corner…Almost Complete. Ownership of Learning Through Seesaw. August 25, 2015 at 1:49 am. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Address never...

Ownership of Learning Through Seesaw. August 24, 2015. The gem of the whole experience was a mention of the app Seesaw, which I had never heard of. I investigated it and I can’t wait to get started! It is a website where students can choose the work they want to display in a portfolio with pictures and videos. These portfolios can also be shared with parents through email. What an amazing opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and OWN it! And now I pass it on to you. If it’s possibl...

Open Middle, Open Minds. January 19, 2016. So, this was my first attempt at an “Open Middle” problem, and I’m not sure it even fits the parameters exactly. What I understood to be the most important aspect from the problems we practiced in my Math Rocks training is that the problem needs to be open to creative thinking. My class has been … More Open Middle, Open Minds. Open Middle, Open Minds. Open Middle, Open Minds. More Success In Number Talks. What do you notice? What do you wonder?
