Sensitive and artistically inclined caveman. Thursday, February 02, 2012. MERCY - a dark tale of loss by João Paulo Simões. M E R CY is an independent film written and directed by João Paulo Simões. It explores the notions of family and identity through the brief encounter between two women. This unforgiving tale retains its ambiguity until the very last frame of the film. I agreed, of course. Well, you do, don't you? I'll try anything once. Nothing to lose, is there? João, the Director, felt that Jude a...

BrianT: The rotting corpse of Psalter Lane

Sensitive and artistically inclined caveman. Friday, January 22, 2010. The rotting corpse of Psalter Lane. Psalter Lane Art College is dead. Once a jewel in Sheffield's crown, a magnet for would be artists, designers, jewellery makers and film directors from all over Britain, it was swallowed up by Sheffield Poly, soon to become Sheffield Hallam University who took the decision, in 2008, to close it. So what is Psalter Lane like now? I arrived just as it began to rain, on a chilly, damp afternoon, a trul...

Sensitive and artistically inclined caveman. Friday, June 20, 2008. I am The Spirit of Dark and Lonely Waters. When I was a kid, in the early 70s, there were a series of Public Information Films aimed at children, mainly to do with learning to swim, staying away from railways and deep water, and not taking sweets off strange men. Some of them were genuinely disturbing, and probably wouldn't be allowed on telly these days in case they traumatised the kiddies, which perhaps wouldn't be a bad thing. For a w...

BrianT: Fried Egg - a true story (some names changed to protect the guilty)

Sensitive and artistically inclined caveman. Wednesday, September 14, 2011. Fried Egg - a true story (some names changed to protect the guilty). Bruce Robinson must have met Egg, because Danny (Withnail and I) IS Egg. When I was at Newcastle Uni in 1981, my allotted room-mate was an avowedly thatcherite, Daily Mail reading, public school educated son of a Surrey doctor, called Keith. He was everything my nascent, Northern working-class, left-leaning principles dictated that I should hate. A vestige of ch...

Sensitive and artistically inclined caveman. Tuesday, June 26, 2007. The return of Shirley Bassey. Shirley Bassey has probably never been away, but to most people, particularly anyone under 35, she may have seemed like a name from the past, because she hasn't been the star she once was since perhaps the late 70s. All good fun, and it was great to see la Bassey in good vocal form, but it was pure cabaret (if only she'd played at Lost Vagueness at 2am eh? However, little did anybody suspect just. I sat up ...

Sensitive and artistically inclined caveman. Thursday, December 04, 2008. Best of Kendal Mountain Film Festival Day 2. It was the second evening of Matt Heason's 'Best of Kendal' roadshow, which for Monday and Tuesday had set up a high camp in Sheffield's cosy Showroom cinema, home to Kendal's precocious cousin, ShAFF. As with Monday's films, these were a varied bunch. First up was Journey of a Red Fridge. But to Hari, it represents hardship, poverty and a trap from which he must escape. We wish him ...

Sensitive and artistically inclined caveman. Thursday, September 27, 2007. It's been a long time since I did a blog entry, what with one thing and another. I've been so busy with stuff I just haven't had timme, but now I'm back and I promise to my loyal readership that I will be doing a 'poper' blog entry in the next few days. What whould you rather be attacked by? The werewolf or a polar bear? It's a Norco Six SE, 2007 model. I'll tell you more about it in my next entry. Anyway, as I'm pressed for time,...
