http://sehanley.blogspot.com/2013/11/50-years-and-day.html
News tech and culture. Saturday, November 23, 2013. 50 Years and a Day. During this, 50th anniversary of the assassination of President Kennedy, many people have been giving spin and perspective. Some of it has been predictable, some, outrageous. It has been a special gift to turn my internet feed onto my television screen and experience the news and programming of CBS from 50 years ago, a time when I was far to young to really remember any of it. And then, the finis of tonight, a brief essay by Harry Re...

The sometimes informed, often spontaneous, usually geeky musings of Mike Hanley. Wednesday, February 23, 2011. Adam Wilt, writing for ProVideo Coalition. About the current state of the film/video post-production world:. A few years back, we were talking about seeing the end of the formats wars. Remember when we shot interlaced 4x3 SDTV with a specified colorimetry and gamma to a handful of tape formats, and delivered interlaced 4x3 SDTV to an audience using interlaced 4x3 CRTs? I say, having just spent o...

http://devnull42.blogspot.com/2009/08/twitter-isnt-cool-at-least-not.html
The sometimes informed, often spontaneous, usually geeky musings of Mike Hanley. Saturday, August 08, 2009. Twitter Isn't Cool (at least not traditionally). But there's a problem with this new mentality - the "real world" is now so hell-bent on calling out the next internet fad, that they keep jumping the shark before it even learns to swim! Funny thing about that; As Ars Technica reports, there are more Twitter users over the age of 55 than under 25. In fact, I know many more who are openly disdainful a...

http://sehanley.blogspot.com/2012/08/they-pull-me-back-in.html
News tech and culture. Friday, August 10, 2012. They pull me back in. I'm back. Back to public radio. At first, the clip from "The Godfather, Part III" came to mind:. As apt as that Al Pacino moment may seem in the context of going back to the realm of coffee mugs and pledge drives, my "return" is pretty exciting. I have accepted the position of General Manager for WBHM in Birmingham, Alabama. And a strong community of listeners and supporters. I am eager to contribute to the success of what is next.

The sometimes informed, often spontaneous, usually geeky musings of Mike Hanley. Saturday, March 10, 2012. I still say that Disney's marketing team screwed the pooch on this one by dropping "of Mars" from the title, leaving the uninformed viewer really confused as to what in blazes the movie is even about. This quote from io9's review. Sums it up pretty well for me:. Though I disagree with the author on one point: I rather liked the frame story! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The sometimes informed, often spontaneous, usually geeky musings of Mike Hanley. Sunday, January 11, 2015. On Teenagers and Social Media Apps. I just read a story on Medium on "A Teenager's View on Social Media.". While reading it, I saw some interesting connections to my post about Twitter from back in 2009. So I thought it worth writing about. Since I am now slipping inexorably closer to the "30" milepost, it's worth admitting that I'm probably not such an authority on such things anymore. This one rea...

The sometimes informed, often spontaneous, usually geeky musings of Mike Hanley. Thursday, July 14, 2011. Extreme and Murderous Absence. Space is a vast and frightening thing; it is an extreme and murderous absence; it's the closest physical metaphor for the disturbing unknowns that follow death; space is a villain from a children's book - it's the Nothing from The NeverEnding Story. Robert Brockway, writing the Cracked.com article "7 Awesome Images That Will Make You Mourn The Space Shuttle". I am a "re...
