Two Hives Down | Garden Geekery
http://gardengeekery.com/2015/03/01/two-hives-down
Gardener and beekeeper in New York's Capital Region. So I’ve been putting off writing this for a while, because I’m so upset with myself for letting it happen. But mistakes are how you learn, and this could help someone else or help me remember for next time. I lost two of my hives so far this winter, and they were both my fault. The poor things didn’t have enough honey for the winter, and they starved. Lesson 1: Check early and often, especially when you know they’re starting the winter low on stores.

Gardener and beekeeper in New York's Capital Region. Varroa mites are the bane of honeybees’ existence. They’ve become a huge problem of late, contributing to spread of disease, weakening of colonies, and death of colonies. They’re nasty little buggers, looking like ticks on the bees. Gross. To keep…. Holy Crap | Garden Geekery

Gardener and beekeeper in New York's Capital Region. I don’t really have a lot of time at the moment, but I just had to write this post. (Have to let my heart rate come back down, anyway.) I’m extracting a bunch more honey this weekend, and I just got in from clearing the supers of bees and taking them off the hives. I have never been so thankful for my bee suit. It didn’t even freak me out when I accidentally instigated robbing. I may try the triangle escape board next time, because that way when I go t...

Garden Geeked
Discussing the things that I love. Gardening, running, music, nature and technology. Sunday, March 24, 2013. In years past, I have started my seeds using those peat pellet kits you get at most home stores. You know the ones that come with a tray and a clear plastic dome to simulate a green house? They always start out nicely, however once they start, I never quite know what to do next. Do I leave the dome on? Where should I put them? Should I transplant them into bigger pots? I will continue to share my ...
