Projects: History of Shirati Hospital. In 1934, Mennonite Missionaries arrived in Tanganyika (now Tanzania), East Africa and settled in the Shirati area. The prevalence of malaria, dysentery, and tropical fevers required the early dispatch of a medical team. The local chief assisted in the effort by erecting the first huts for the care of the sick. Simple structures were erected and the medical services emerged. Click to view larger photos.

How You Can Help. How You Can Help. The hospital is one of only two hospitals in the Tarime District. Shirati Hospital has 150 beds which at times are shared by more than one patient. The majority of the local population has no health insurances and due to the extreme poverty of the area have little money for health care services.
