December 31, 2011. That’s right, it’s called Hogmanay, not New Year’s. And if you think otherwise you live somewhere not nearly Scottish enough. Facts About Improvisation | The Daily Improvisation

Handel wrote one treatise on performance – and half of it was devoted to improvising dances and fugues. Schubert was almost completely unknown as a composer in his day – but he was renowned as an improviser, playing in taverns all night improvising waltzes, dances, character pieces, and drinking songs. Rahms made money as a child playing the piano in bars, improvising and playing by ear waltzes and dances that were in Viennese fashion. He came to public prominence when Schumann attended a performance...

Eric Edberg: Zoë Keating on how she does it

Life, the cello, and everything. Saturday, September 06, 2008. Zoë Keating on how she does it. The fabulous looping cellist Zoë Keating explains it all. Well, not in as much detail as those of us who also do cello looping might like, but it's a great WNYC Radiolab. Podcast, with lots of music. Zoë does looped cello compositions; my own looping is mostly improvised or quasi-improvised. (Of course she also improvises, and the podcast ends with an imprvisation.). I love her stuff. Oh, right, addictive.
