Dwellers of the Dust. Monthly Archives: April 2015. Silent Retreat Reflection – Peace. A couple Saturdays ago, I sat down to breakfast and ate the best biscuit I’ve ever had, but I couldn’t tell anybody. My friend Michelle who encouraged me to attend ended up joining the Advisory Board of the retreat center. She took this photo on her retreat last year and is in charge of the retreat’s presence on social media. I just sat, shared a meal, and truly tasted the best biscuit I have ever eaten. With my phone ...

However, I’m of course limited in my understanding of God and in my ability to interpret the biblical text. So I invite your help. Thanks for reading! There are significant problems with this view, and foremost among them is that it’s not at all found in the New Testament. So, what is this biblical way of assessing spiritual gifts all about? Dwellers of the Dust. Clothes and Palm Sunday. Today is named for palm branches, which must have been the best party favors available in first-century Jerusalem when Jesus was welcomed into the city as if they were welcoming their king. In most churches on Palm Sunday, leafy branches are waved around and brooches in the shape of the cross made from bark are pinned to our lapels as we welcome Jesus as king at the beginning of the week that will end with his rejection and death. Only in John, who so often ...

Dwellers of the Dust. Monthly Archives: April 2014. What Jesus was doing on Saturday. Jesus died and was buried on a Friday afternoon. Although the New Testament makes no claim on exactly when he was raised from the dead, the assumption is that he was resurrected early Sunday morning–at least after sunset on Saturday. What was Jesus doing between sunset Friday and sunset Saturday? Between death and resurrection? Last known photo of Augustine. The Western world, period. One is anti-Semitism, evidence of w...

Dwellers of the Dust. One year ago today, I didn’t get any work done. One year ago today I sat in my office at my former job and, to my memory, didn’t get any work done. I was gay, in the closet, and on staff at a church that remains opposed to LGBTQ people living true to their sexual identities. My church and the denomination of which it is a part will still not officiate, celebrate, or recognize the marriages of same-sex couples. The judgment of the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit is reversed.
