The Invitation | Emergence
https://emergenceofnewpath.wordpress.com/2014/01/02/the-invitation
Finding a New Path to Social Change. January 2, 2014. Hospitality, the welcoming of strangers, is the essence of a restorative community. Our hospitality begins with the invitationGenuine invitation changes our relationship with others, for we come to them as an equal. Peter Block. In my last post, I talked about two key actions that distinguish leaders as host extending the right kinds of invitation. The best way for me to illustrate the gift-focused invitation is by telling you a story that was shared ...

A Lovely Mess | Basement as Metaphor
https://basementasmetaphor.wordpress.com/2013/08/14/a-lovely-mess
Finding meaning in life's messy places. August 14, 2013. Aunt Ercelle’s Jewelry Box. Last week, my kids and I made a road trip to Wadesboro, North Carolina to visit my mom. My Aunt Ercelle died in June of 2012. My family and I had stopped by her house to visit her Memorial Day weekend. I knew that she didn’t seem well. During our return trip home, while stopped at a gas station, I received the call from my mom with the sad news. As I mentioned, she was a bit outrageous. I’ll never forget when she sto...

Finding meaning in life's messy places. A Space Age Space. September 16, 2013. Look for the unveiling of the new basement studio space in the coming weeks. But for now, my next couple of blog posts will be about [drumroll, please] my adventures in upholstery! Nate’s words have been on my mind a lot lately–especially while I’m sitting in my living room. I know I’d prefer furniture that’s smaller in scale, but weightier in substance. To use Nate’s language, I want furniture that, tells a story. About conne...

Finding meaning in life's messy places. Getting Past the Desk. June 12, 2013. Photo from the Craigslist post for this desk. Today is Wednesday, June 12. This desk has been in our house for about 5 years. For most of that time, it lived happily in my daughter’s room. But, with the advent of middle school, the baby desk was branded as inadequate and banished to the utility room with all the other larger scale cast-offs. Your cast-off becomes someone else’s commodity. A couple of days went by. Nothing.

Finding meaning in life's messy places. The Desk Sold, It Just Took a Little Vision. June 24, 2013. A quick update on my last post: I sold the desk. Three days ago, an email appeared in my inbox with the title, Child’s Desk and containing the simple inquiry, Hello, is your child’s desk still available? Without much fanfare, Krystle (the sender of the email) and her lovely family (husband and two cute-as-pie daughters) came by to pick it up on Sunday. Okay, I was. So, maybe “vision” (something...Instead, ...

Finding meaning in life's messy places. October 14, 2013. The newly upholstered chair! The chair is finished. It’s already at home in the living room cozying up to an existing throw pillow as if they were soul mates. It’s hard to believe that this is the same chair that, at first, was such an outcast that my son wouldn’t help bring it in from the car until he was sure that none of the neighbors were watching. What a difference a little fabric and a lot of staples can make! The Chair, before. While busily...

Finding meaning in life's messy places. The Wisdom of the Refrigerator. May 20, 2013. Okay, so I’m two weeks in. It feels like a bit of a progress report is in order. After 3 trips to the dump, 4 trips to our local mega thrift store Value Village, and countless bags of trash in our own garbage cans, I am happy to report that I can actually find the furnace in the furnace room (see picture below)! The washing machine swished, the cramped room’s walls came in even closer. We never really knew the owners of...

https://basementasmetaphor.wordpress.com/2013/05/23/the-dump-and-the-village
Finding meaning in life's messy places. The Dump and the Village. May 23, 2013. Is the character of a room defined by its largest major appliance? The furnace room is all cozy with its hot water heater and, duh, the furnace. But, the catchall utility room this place has a different vibe, completely. The refrigerator-freezer dominates with its loud, icy hum. I know you’re thinking: Vacuum cleaners, washing machines, even dishwashers, but a noisy refrigerator? Donnie, to the left. James, to the right.

30 June, 2011. This is what the avengers movie should look like (yes, spider man should definitely make a guest appearance). Unfortunately I expect it to want to take itself seriously and thus to suck. At the same time, I really hope I am wrong, and there are reasons to feel optimistic. Let's look at what has come out of the Marvel Universe "lately":. Hulk - there have been two movies and none of them very good, basically they don't deserve your attention. And now back to Avengers: as the Iron Man and Th...
