Saturday, November 3, 2012. Florida dry prairie and the Lost Bird Project. Yesterday for work I took a trip to Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park (KPPSP), located in Okeechobee, Florida. This park is home to one of the last populations of Florida Grasshopper Sparrow, so it's a place I am hoping to become very familiar with. The office building had a lot of foot traffic from animals that would normally be hunted elsewhere, but here are protected, like these Wild Turkeys and white-tailed deer. This may ...

EcoGypsy: Springtime in NY

http://www.ecologypsy.blogspot.com/2011/05/springtime-in-ny.html

Thursday, May 5, 2011. As I proved last summer, I'm not great at keeping up with these things. But I thought I'd try again this summer, as I'll be in a whole new place and doing some entirely new things. In a week and a half, I'll be heading to the Albany Pine Bush Preserve in NY's state capital to do some work with Karner blue butterflies and prairie warblers, to name just a couple. But before I get to that, I thought I'd share some of the beauty of springtime in my hometown of Greece, NY. A beautiful j...

EcoGypsy: First week

http://www.ecologypsy.blogspot.com/2011/05/well-ive-made-it-through-my-first-week.html

Saturday, May 21, 2011. Well, I've made it through my first week at the Albany Pine Bush! Unfortunately it rained during almost our entire period of training. And since this is a field job, it meant a lot of time spent slogging through areas that looked like this:. The Karners don't actually feed on these plants, but lay their eggs on them. No lupines = no Karners. Luckily, lupines are really beautiful, and I think most people wouldn't mind having them around. It's an eastern hognose snake, which is thre...

EcoGypsy: October 2012

http://www.ecologypsy.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Sunday, October 21, 2012. First trip to the Hammock. I almost gave up right then, and got back in the car to drive the main loop instead of walking the trails on foot. Anyway, with the help of the very nice couple, I managed to spot my very first yellow-throated warbler (not to be confused with the common yellowthroat. which is also a warbler). They're quite common down here, and hang around all-year round. It was still exciting for me, though. It must be used to the passage of people, as it allowed me t...

EcoGypsy: May 2010

http://www.ecologypsy.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, May 29, 2010. Certain organisms out here are definitely thriving in the moist conditions. As I walked across the community pastures, I spotted more mushrooms than I have ever seen out here. They appear to lie dormant in the ground until enough water arrives, then they sprout up like so many miniature umbrellas, shielding the ground beneath. Yet life always continues. Our searches for nests have been going very well, and a couple (both Horned Larks) have fledged chicks already. Today we ...Today...

Welcome to my world of wonderful things…. About The Living Lake. A Bird, A Ferry Crossing, and a Hiatus. April 5, 2013 in Nature. For certain reasons, this blog is going to continue to be on a semi-long-term-but-temporary hiatus. In the mean time, enjoy this photo I took on a trip to Lake Diefenbaker of. A barn swallow (thanks to C.Debets for the ID, once again my terrible birding ID skills caused me to seek alternate sources for help). You can also follow me on twitter. CBSME @ T.L.L. Welcome to my world of wonderful things…. About The Living Lake. Welcome to my library. November 17, 2011 in Decorate. I would like to introduce to you my favourite room in my new house. At 11’ x 6’, it is the second smallest room in my house. The smallest? The room started out a little plain. The previous owners had a dresser in here. And that was about it. I could do better. I knew I could. And bright white roof and trim. There’s a few things about room itself that I really like. So you take an already...
