Honey and hive products local to Saffron Walden. Tag Archives: bee swarms. Outside the apiary June 2015: Honey bees in the wall. June 28, 2015. Mike and Hannah live in a converted barn with a stud-work and weatherboard construction much-loved by swarming bees looking for a new home. The bees were coming and going close to the kitchen door and could be seen entering the woodwork alongside the extractor-fan vent. Were they in the house wall or were they in the boiler-house lean-to? June 28, 2015. Deryck Jo...

Honey and hive products local to Saffron Walden. July 2016 In the Apiary. August 2, 2016. Several swarm calls have enabled hive S2 to go back into service again but not into production; too late in the season for that. Warleys, the field behind us, was re-drilled with borage to replace the ploughed-in oil-seed-rape. This grew well and came truly on flower at the beginning of July. Unfortunately some other more attractive forage took the bees in the opposite direction for the first two weeks. Chronic Bee ...

Honey and hive products local to Saffron Walden. In the apiary March 2015. April 29, 2015. What a glorious start to spring. I haven’t consulted my records, but this year could easily be the earliest I’ve been able to do a hive inspection; March 8. Hive 8 had almost consumed their pollen-patty and were wall-to-wall bees and crying out for a super. Sorry girls but I have other plans for you. With such a thriving colony and four weeks until the rape is on flower this colony can be shook-swarmed. Deryck in h...

Honey and hive products local to Saffron Walden. In the Apiary January 2015. January 11, 2015. December 29 was a very frosty night followed by a sunny morning. The ground was frozen hard but not deep but I decided nevertheless to get the nets on the hives. Once the ground is solid, and the green woodpeckers can no longer get at ants nests they go for the hives. I use the roof of the fruit cage as this is not needed for it’s real purpose in winter-time, and peg it out like a ridge tent. January 11, 2015.

Honey and hive products local to Saffron Walden. June 2016 In The Out-Apiary. June 24, 2016. More than twenty years ago I made the decision that out-apiaries were just not worth the trouble. Arriving to find that you needed a special piece of equipment and having to make an extra journey; arriving to do an inspection and finding that nothing had changed; strapping up the hives to transport them back and forth etc. Hives at the out-apiary. Queen and workers in a matchbox. S2 at home beside hive 3. Hive S2...

Honey and hive products local to Saffron Walden. In the apiary April 2015. April 30, 2015. A few weeks back the Saffron Walden division of Essex Beekeepers had a very interesting talk from Stuart Roweth about his ‘beegym’ invention; how it worked, how it was developed and the various stages of its evolution. Have a look at www.beegym.co.uk. His illustrated lecture backed up by ample data showed his bees using the various parts of the gym to groom themselves and scrape off the offending mites.
