Monday, February 8, 2016. Lincoln Reloaded: Playwright Gary Moore Raps the Great Emancipator. Gary Moore in Shanghai, 1988. When the student is ready, the saying goes, the teacher will appear. Surely this was the case when author Gary Moore took a teaching job he didn’t particularly want on a campus full of students who didn’t particularly want to be there themselves. The place was Shanghai. The year, 1988. Recently retired from academia, Moore, who earned an MA from Johns Hopkins, held faculty and admin...

Sunday, November 22, 2015. Meri Stiles: Compassionate Heart, Activist Art. Gravity, if you will, has little pull in the prints and drawings of artist Meri Stiles. Whales float overhead. Etheric spirit forms rise from the corporal. Simply drawn figures with elongated arms and legs shed the weight of the world and fly, reminiscent of Chagall’s evocative work. Other paintings showcase unexpected juxtapositions. The cleanness and precision of the lines of her drawings are often streaked or stained with water...

Friday, February 6, 2015. The Dogs of Palermo. Going blonde I thought might make for easier upkeep. Blonde was a mistake. We’ll just be frank about it. It was, in a word, disturbing. Since then, over the span of a year, I’ve experimented with various shades of light brown:. Gold, natural, warm, ash, honey. Always hoping to find a miracle in a box, I’m as gullible as beauty product consumers come. I am, conveniently, an actual writer, with actual books and many articles to my name. Also not my strong suits.

Friday, August 7, 2015. Mr Davis Has Left the Building. Readers of this column will have noticed that over the last months, instead of offering my typical fare of marginally insightful commentary on crows or the challenging climate, on the vagaries of the writing life or what falls out when you shake a family tree, I’ve instead conducted interviews with writers who are meeting their deadlines and publishing actual books. Yeah, I didn’t think you’d buy that. The ruts are deeply entrenched as well. Any sor...

Tuesday, September 2, 2014. Taking Flight with Tanya Sousa. The animals talk in Tanya Sousa’s new novel, THE STARLING GOD. They offer comfort to one another, hold conversations on the activities of the powerful bipeds they regard with awe, and reflect on their place and purpose in the grand scheme of things. “There is greatness,” one communicates to another, “in sharing what we were born to tell.”. Sharing what she was born to tell is exactly what Tanya Sousa is all about. 8220;I like the idea of blendin...
