Sunbathing north of the 66th parallel. They look like aliens, but they are tasty →. May 26, 2013 · 9:20 pm. Diapers, enroute to Russia. Today we arrived in Russia: Andrea and I, half a dozen Russian shoppers and at minimum, 10 jumbo packages of Pampers diapers. Which makes for an awful lot of border crossing and a fluidity of national borders that I think would surprise most Canadians. (With the possible exception of those in the east who live really close to the States, I guess.). It’s become common kno...

May 24, 2013 · 9:00 pm. Sunbathing north of the 66th parallel. People getting some sun in northern Tromsø. Today, the sun came out in a big way. We spent the last couple days of Tromso, the big city here in northern Norway. It was over 20 degrees every day, sunny and there were people sunbathing all over town. Who knew this was the Arctic? Sun, water and beautiful weather in Tromsø. Basically, what I’m learning is that most of what most people know about the Arctic is wrong. Sometimes it’s cold but s...

June 1, 2013 · 5:32 am. They look like aliens, but they are tasty. This crab was too small and had to be thrown back. Loch Ness has its eponymous monster. British Columbia has the Ogopogo. What lurks beneath the Barents Sea, you ask? Unlike its mythical counterparts, the King Crab is notable for being real, not to mention edible. But you definitely wouldn’t want one of these little monsters as a pet. When we’d been cruising for awhile everyone climbed up the ladders to brave the sea wind and watch one of...

Greetings from Tromsø | Norway 2013
https://ahillnorway.wordpress.com/2013/05/23/greetings-from-tromso
A travel blog by Andrea Hill. Sun and seals in the Arctic →. May 23, 2013. I’ve arrived in one of the world’s largest Arctic cities. Last night, Alex and I flew into Tromsø, which lies about 450 kilometres due west of Kirkenes. The city likes to boast that it is home to the world’s northernmost university, beer brewery, cathedral and botanical garden. So far I’ve explored or at least stolen a glimpse of all these claims to fame. Views from the beautiful coastal city of Tromsø. Looking out over Tromsø.

A travel blog by Andrea Hill. Crabs and political superstars. Finding Canadian connections in Oslo →. At the Barents Summit. June 4, 2013. My last day at the BarentsObserver certainly didn’t disappoint. I was very excited to provide one of the BarentsObserver’s first news hits. About the Summit early in the day. This was further developed over the course of the afternoon as I also worked on a piece about challenges faced by indigenous people. This entry was posted in Kirkenes, Norway. The road to Kiruna.

Hiking in Kirkenes where well-defined trails are overrated.
