Classical Candor: Shostakovich: Sonata in D minor for Cello and Piano (CD review)
https://classicalcandor.blogspot.com/2015/05/shostakovich-sonata-in-d-minor-for.html
Shostakovich: Sonata in D minor for Cello and Piano (CD review). Also, Brahms: Trio for Piano and Strings, No. 2. Daniil Shafran, cello, and Lydia Pecherskaya, piano; Gary Graffman, piano, Berl Senofsky, violin, and Shirley Trepel, cello. HDTT HDCD184. Question: What do the two pieces of music on this disc have in common? After all, they are by two completely different composers from two completely different centuries. First up on the agenda is the Sonata in D minor for Cello for Piano. Op 87, by German ...
Classical Candor: Shall I Compare Thee? (CD review)
https://classicalcandor.blogspot.com/2015/05/shall-i-compare-thee-cd-review.html
Shall I Compare Thee? Choral Songs on Shakespeare Texts. Chicago a cappella. Cedille CDR 900000 085. If the success of a CD depends on the number of times one throws it into the player, then the 2005 Cedille release Shall I Compare? Must be a record of the year, at least for me. This disc features one-of-a-kind songs based on Shakespearean texts, good a cappella singing, and an equally fine recording. The results I find hard to resist. With cascading voices; a fairly silly "Witches' Blues" from Macbeth.
Classical Candor: Waller: The South Shore (CD review)
https://classicalcandor.blogspot.com/2015/05/waller-south-shore-cd-review.html
Waller: The South Shore (CD review). Music of Michael Vincent Waller. Various artists. XI Records XI 136 (2-disc set). Solo and chamber works- fully illustrates these characteristics. More important, the compositions entertain both the mind and the heart. Being the old Romantic that I am, I tended to favor the more lyrical numbers in the set, starting at the beginning with Anthems for cello and piano. For string quartet is a gentle set of variations, quite beautiful in its wistful longing. For piano trio...
Classical Candor: The Basic Classical Collection on Compact Disc (Recommended Recordings)
https://classicalcandor.blogspot.com/2009/09/basic-classical-collection-on-compact.html
The Basic Classical Collection on Compact Disc (Recommended Recordings). The following recommendations are personal favorites of mine derived from many years of listening and comparing. I tried to base the suggestions on both performance and sound, so most of them are stereo recordings. If you don't see your own personal favorites among my listed items, it's either because I've never heard them or because I've heard them and didn't care for them all that much. Martinon/Paris Conserv. O. (HDTT). Pickett/N...
Classical Candor: Desert Island Classics
https://classicalcandor.blogspot.com/2009/12/desert-island-classics.html
Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 "Pastoral" (Bohm, Vienna Philharmonic O.) DG. The problem I had here was deciding which of several different recordings of the "Pastoral Symphony" I liked best. The other contenders- Fritz Reiner, Bruno Walter, Otto Klemperer, and Eugene Jochum- made the choice tough, but I went finally with Bohm's gentle, genial approach. Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique (Beecham, French National Radio O.) EMI. Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 1 (Pollini; Kletzki, Philharmonia O.) EMI. With the LSO has...

http://www.wheresrunnicles.com/2015/08/eif-2015-last-hotel-or-in-shadow-of.html
Thursday, 13 August 2015. EIF 2015 – The Last Hotel, or, In the Shadow of John Adams. Posted by Finn Pollard. A great work, doesn't wholly get past this) and Dennehy and Walsh fail to do this. The work itself is also odd. The subject matter concerns an English husband and wife who have travelled to this run down Irish hotel in order to assist an Irish woman to commit suicide. My experience of Enda Walsh's writing previously was mixed. I found Misterman. Quite powerful and Ballyturk. We take pride in offe...

Confessions of a Cinephiliac. A forum for cinema and pop culture. Movie Review: WHITE HOUSE DOWN. Roland Emmerich sure gets a kick out of destroying Washington DC. Graupner: Two Overtures, G14 and D5 (CD review). Also, Cantata for the Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity. Barbara Schlick, soprano; Hein Meens, tenor; Hermann Max, Das Kleine Konzert. CPO 999 592-2. Graupner was an important composer, though now largely unknown; the performances are animated yet wholly earnest; the sound is natural and lifelike. It is a lovely album.
