Churchland Lab |

In my laboratory, we investigate the neural circuits underlying decision-making. We use carefully designed paradigms that encourage experimental subjects to deliberate over incoming sensory evidence before making a decision. We develop behavioral paradigms to study decision-making, and measure and manipulate neurons during those decisions. Our long term goal is to understand how the brain can make decisions that integrate inputs from our multiple senses, stored memories and innate impulses.

PhD, University of California, San Francisco, 2003. Anne Churchland is the lab’s principle investigator. She came to Cold Spring Harbor in 2010 after studying neural mechanisms of decision-making as a postdoctoral fellow in Mike Shadlen’s. Lab Since arriving at Cold Spring Harbor, she has developed multisensory decision-making paradigms in rodents to investigate the neural circuits that support this ability. She is also the co-director of the CSHL Undergraduate Research Program.

This code makes it possible for you to compute the VarCE using either an example dataset (0% coherence recording from single, isolated LIP neurons) or with your own dataset. The comments at the beginning of compute VarCE.m explain how to get your data in the right format. All materials can be downloaded here. For more information on our approach, you can find our paper, and a little movie about it, here. Working towards ideal performance.

Perceptual decision-making at Cold Spring Harbor. Exciting results from across neuroscience presented at the McKnight Foundation Neuroscience Meeting. July 1, 2015. There were many interesting talks at the meeting. Two scientific highlights for us were:. 1 Hearing about recent work from Ben Barres’s lab. He warns that A1 (bad) astrocytes proliferate in aging brains and may play a role in Alzheimer’s disease. 2 Some more comforting news about aging from Elizabeth Kensinger’s lab. May 19, 2015. Brought together 6 of us to argue it out. The lineup included myself. In the end, we agreed that in. One Response to “What can we learn about the brain by perturbing neural activity?
