This was the last of a series of portages up the Mattawa River and as they were no longer needed, the Voyageurs then threw away their river poles or "perches". Pictured on an early November morning from atop the cliffs on the north shore the water flow through the chutes was quite high. Hasn't been a lot of sunshine or clear blue skies around this summer but this was one of those rare clear sky mornings. Picture was taken on the pond not far from the portage crossing to Coopers Lake.
