Learning to play Irish traditional music. September 22nd, 2008 by Michael. Earlier this year I got my second flute, a Copley & Boegli. As much as I still like my Tipple. I think this was definitely an upgrade. It’s taken me some time to adjust to the differences between the two instruments, but now that I’ve gotten used to it I think my Copley Delrin and I will be very happy together for a long time to come. October 22nd, 2007 by Michael. And the Tipple-Fajardo wedge. October 21st, 2007 by Michael. Sweet...

ABCP--Blackwood Used in Woodwind Instruments
http://www.blackwoodconservation.org/music.html
Blackwood and Woodwind Instruments. If you have ever heard the mellow tones of a jazz or classical clarinet solo, you have been listening to the natural sound of an. African blackwood, which makes an excellent flute, is now the standard by which all other flute tonewoods are judged. Since blackwood is a tree that grows twisted and full of flaws, extracting high quality timber is extremely difficult. Mpingo also figures prominently in the making of bagpipes. A bagpipe is a wind instrument which produces s...

The Hurdy Gurdy, called Vielle à Roue. In French and Drehleier. At right is the magnificent medieval Symphonie. A hurdy gurdy built for me by George and Anwyn Leverett at Altarwind.com. It has two melody strings, two drone strings and no trompette or "buzzing bridge". This style of hurdy gurdy is commonly depicted in iconography of the 10th through the 15th centuries. We use it for our earliest music. It has a sweet, quieter tone than the larger Bosch instrument, which does have a trompette. Tuning where...

Keyless flute tips
http://mfleck.cs.illinois.edu/flute-tips.html
To keep things simple, I won't attempt to duplicate materials that are already available. Rather, I'll try to stitch these pieces together, give you a sense of where to look for information, and fill in some gaps where I had a lot of trouble figuring out something important. Rick Wilson has a nice comparison. Despite superficial differences in construction, and despite being pitched an octave higher, pennywhistles are very similar to simple-system flutes in terms of how they are played. This means th...

The Irish Chronicles
http://barbaraprice.com/irish/rudyrosa.html
I did it. I made the leap to a keyed wooden flute. But do I do the sensible thing and buy a Casey Burns? Noooooo, not me. I find an antique Rudall and Rose on Ebay. And this is not just any Rudall and Rose, it's boxwood with four keys, rare. Seller was Patrick Olwell. A previous owner was Chris Norman. Boxwood is what is called "unstable" wood - it shrinks and expands a lot with changes in humidity (like when you blow into it). Meaning it's prone to cracks unless handled with great care. Upper octave....
