EFI – Ramblings about stuff 'n junk
https://www.reberger.com/1971-holden-hq-monaro/efi
Ramblings about stuff 'n junk. This modification was quite a challenging one. I had to do a fair amount of learning about exactly how all elements of the internal combustion engine worked, how electronic fuel injection worked and how to tie the 2 together. I had started to read about this DIY system called Megasquirt. And then it was given to a friend of who had his own fabrication business to weld the posts in that held the fuel rails in place. Injectors selected for the task were 42lb/hr. Ignition timi...

Roller Cam – Ramblings about stuff 'n junk
https://www.reberger.com/1971-holden-hq-monaro/roller-cam
Ramblings about stuff 'n junk. After fitting a solid flat tappet cam and much fun had with it, I had decided to check what the cam looked like after a reported failure from a good friend of mine Geoff. In Geoff’s 1966 Pontiac GTO, he had fitted a similar cam into his 455 and almost had some lobes fail/go round with excessive pitting on others. I’m glad I checked mine because I had found the exact same problem! But when you have multiport EFI, anything is possible. 1971 Holden HQ Monaro.

Starter Motor Conversion – Ramblings about stuff 'n junk
https://www.reberger.com/1971-holden-hq-monaro/starter-motor-conversion
Ramblings about stuff 'n junk. I also had a similar Nippon Denso style starter motor on my dads Pontiac wagon so I temporarily stole that to check whether it was my battery or wiring first, but it wasn’t. The problem is that the teeth on dads old starter motor showed signs of assymetrical wear so to was nearly impossible to shim it correctly without it jamming or skipping over teeth. But dads car was not stranded…. Previously when I had done my Radiator Conversion. Later on in the piece I did have an iss...

Valve Covers – Ramblings about stuff 'n junk
https://www.reberger.com/1971-holden-hq-monaro/valve-covers
Ramblings about stuff 'n junk. So far I have about 8 hours into the pair and about $100 in materials. The end product will have a breather on each cover, PCV provision and mounts for 4 LS1 coils on each cover. Cut/Bent/Drilled the covers out of 2mm sheet, cut the crush tubes to size and started to form the end plates. Slowly getting there…. Crush tubes welded to the base after tacking them up and squaring them all up. And tacked into place. Will start working on the end plates next. I also have a set of ...

Brake Overhaul – Ramblings about stuff 'n junk
https://www.reberger.com/1971-holden-hq-monaro/brake-overhaul
Ramblings about stuff 'n junk. If anyone has driven a HQ, you will understand just how CRAP they are in standard form. I also had a problem where the original HQ master cylinder was for cars with drum brake rear ends. Since I converted the rear end to a Ford 9″ unit with disk brakes, I always had the problem of dragging brakes, due to the residual valve in the master cylinder. Since the brake lines were the standard ones from 1971, I also decided to run brand new lines using nickel plated tube.
