The first week of school is gone, and my students are great and appear to be ready to have fun reading and writing. A teacher friend of mine said that we should be “cautiously optimistic” about our new students. Of course, if I’m not optimistic, I might as well put the desks back in rows and head to the copier to make enough handouts for the rest of the school year. Use collaborative learning groups. While viewing and analyzing different media and text is part of my standards, it was always hard for me to incorporate it into my curriculum when I wasn’t given a guide. I have seen it at back to school preplanning meetings and at in services.
