Focus Pull: July 2008

The little details of the big picture. July 29, 2008. True Blood vs. Jennifer's Body. The image on the left is part of HBO's multi-faceted viral marketing campaign for their upcoming vampire show True Blood. Just two days after this poster debuted, 20th Century Fox unveiled the teaser one-sheet for the upcoming film Jennifer's Body. Although the two projects have very different stories, the marketing approach is strikingly similar. Which used the familiar lip-licking closeup back in 1995.

Focus Pull: April 2008

The little details of the big picture. April 1, 2008. The Sincerest Form of Flattery. The upcoming documentary American Teen. Examines the various cliques within the senior class of an Indiana high school. The theatrical poster pays tribute to the artwork for another film that dealt with teen cliques, the '80s teen classic The Breakfast Club. They did a very good job on matching the poses, but my favorite nod to the John Hughes film remains the original poster for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2.

The Cine File: Take Me to the Promised Land: On This Season's Political Cinema
http://aschenker.blogspot.com/2012/12/take-me-to-promised-land-on-this.html
A discussion of classic and contemporary film with Andrew Schenker. Thursday, December 13, 2012. Take Me to the Promised Land: On This Season's Political Cinema. To Zero Dark Thirty. While a solid, engaging, attractively lensed piece of cinema, Gus Van Sant’s hydrofracking drama, Promised Land. Never hits the heights of the other films, offering neither the cross-cut thrills of Argo. The intelligent observation of behind-the-scenes political process of Lincoln. A troubling movie indeed. A discussion of classic and contemporary film with Andrew Schenker. Thursday, August 23, 2012. I was as surprised as anyone to see the outpouring of critical acclaim for Craig Zobel's Compliance. So, yeah, I didn't like the movie for reasons stated above - and below in my review. But, in other, better news, there's also Premium Rush. Also, I tried my hand at another music review. Henry Threadgill and Zooid: Tomorrow Sunny/The Revelry, Spp. Friday, August 10, 2012. Diary of Two Weeks at the Cinema. The Ho...

The Cine File: April 2012
http://aschenker.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
A discussion of classic and contemporary film with Andrew Schenker. Wednesday, April 25, 2012. This week I reviewed a sextet of films of which the standouts are the documentary Booker's Place. And, by far the most high-profile of the lot and the film which gives this post its (somewhat strained) title, The Five-Year Engagement. Formulaic. It's a question of tweaking the formula and using the genre's dictates intelligently, tasks ably handled by Nicholas Stoller's fine rom-com. Time Out New York). A docum...
