Bowen Island Journal: April 2014
http://bowenislandjournal.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Thursday, April 24, 2014. Now that the dolphins and whales have returned, the herring are healthy and the Britannia Mine site is clean, it's time to think about what to do with Howe Sound. Of course being a beautiful and partially pristine fjord near to one of Canada's largest cities makes it a natural to turn the whole thing into a park to super charge tourism and protect the gains, right? Yay for industrial development! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Life in the Salish Sea. Welcome to Bowen's oldest blog.

Bowen Island Journal: May 2015
http://bowenislandjournal.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Friday, May 1, 2015. I've been really enjoying the work we have been doing on the Bowen Island Economic Development Committee. I'm sitting on the Business Retention and Expansion working group and we are about to embark on a project to host a few dialogue circles with local businesses. We want to test out a few assumptions about the way the local economy functions before embarking on strategies to retain and expand it. Vancouver Coastal Health did a survey in 2013. Looking at community wellness on the No...

Bowen Island Journal: February 2015
http://bowenislandjournal.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Thursday, February 19, 2015. Flat water, green earth, grey rocks. A new season beginning. Starting with the contemplation of this primal sea. Friday, February 13, 2015. Mannion Bay on a Friday afternoon. Mild and dry. Work done. On my way to the village to pick up some food and maybe share a pint with neighbours. Stopped to watch mergansers hunting and listen to Eagles and Ravens calling. Thursday, February 12, 2015. Monday, February 9, 2015. DFO in the house. Saturday, February 7, 2015. Last week at the...

Bowen Island Journal: September 2014
http://bowenislandjournal.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Friday, September 26, 2014. Out paddling this afternoon on a calm grey sheet of glass in the soft rain with my friend Tuesday Ryan-Hart who was paddling for this first time. Saw a seal a few meters away watching us. Cormorants and oystercatchers. Gulls and eagles. And later in the forest a barred owl mistook Tuesday's hair for a squirrel and had a go at her. Caitlin fended it off. Saturday, September 20, 2014. The Minister of Transportation insults us all. Dear Mr. Stone. To now suggest that the UBCM, an...

Bowen Island Journal: May 2014

Saturday, May 10, 2014. Doing whatever you want. Our Council has engaged in a major revision of the official community plan for Bowen Island. The problems is that with the exception of the Economic Development Committee they never asked anyone about it. The island has been consumed this past year with fallout around a ferry consultation process that was a sham. We have been demanding better of the province. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Bowen Island Journal: March 2014
http://bowenislandjournal.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 31, 2014. Why BC Ferries has reduced its schedule: bond ratings. BC Ferries released their schedule for Bowen. And all the other islands today today and it features several new holes where regular service used to be. The holes don't make much sense to me, and they certainly aren't equated in any way with the feedback folks gave during the consultations last fall. We are told that service reductions are necessary to save BC Ferries money but ultimately, as my MLA Jordan Sturdy told me. What ...

Thursday, April 30, 2015. Nice overview of what an Official Community Plan does. Monday, April 20, 2015. There big spring bird migrations are in full swing. We have had warblers around here for a month or more and vultures moving north as well. In the last few days the snow geese have been moving by the thousands as well, have fed or overwintered in the Fraser estuary, and flying high at night on the still air, heading to Alaska. Sunday, April 19, 2015. Oil spills and dock fires. Following that, a fire a...

Bowen Island Journal: August 2014
http://bowenislandjournal.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Friday, August 29, 2014. The beauty of the transition. The still and steady thread of summer has taken a turn. A hint of autumn has crept into the sound to try our the glory of its grey on the mountains and the sea. Wednesday, August 27, 2014. Hosted by the sea. This is the first year I've decided to turn my back on all that and see what this ocean is about. And all of that is true. It's hard to describe the kind of restorative power that moment contained. A kind of distancing from the petty and inte...
