Venture Cyclist: VC:VC
http://venturecyclist.blogspot.com/p/vcvc.html
Some time VC and frequent cyclist, hence Venture Cyclist. As I note in the title bar - VentureCyclist is an amalgamation of my (prior) Venture Capital and Cyclist personas. Articles labelled with the VC:VC tag compare Venture Capital (and hence also startups) with cycling (e.g. here. And also with non-profits and non-profit startups (e.g. here. I should really use the term not-for-profit, since many commercial startups are non-profit for far too long! And The Right Question Institute. Where Israelis, Pal...

Some time VC and frequent cyclist, hence Venture Cyclist. Happy 2015… and here are some new year short pieces for you to look at. Who I don’t know, has a blog I just found but already love … here are two great posts that really speak to me, especially having spent so much time in startups and now at a big company: Start-ups versus Big Companies. And also So You Think You Want to Manage? My colleague and mentor-extraordinaire, Brad Feld. Recently suggested: If You Want A Response, Ask Specific Questions.

Venture Cyclist: Four Reasons for a Business Model
http://venturecyclist.blogspot.com/2012/03/four-reasons-for-business-model.html
Some time VC and frequent cyclist, hence Venture Cyclist. Four Reasons for a Business Model. This week at Techstars during my office hours sessions, I was asked questions by several teams which each time led to the same place: please draw a business model diagram for me. Everyone could, or said they could, but in each case it was clearly not a practiced exercise. A business model is not a business plan, although the two are often confused. How can you tell the difference? The Business Model Canvas. You c...

Some time VC and frequent cyclist, hence Venture Cyclist. Great Business Model Canvas introduction. Strategyzer and the Kauffman Foundation have created a great series of short YouTube videos about using the Business Model Canvas. About which I wrote an intro in Four Reasons for a Business Model. The example presented is for a consumer oriented business, but this tool is incredibly powerful for all kinds of endeavors – new companies, new ideas in old companies, non-profits and more. Venture Cyclist: 03/2014

Some time VC and frequent cyclist, hence Venture Cyclist. Birds singing, sun shining, wheels turning. I am so looking forward to starting riding again. Friends of mine cycle through the winter, and maybe cycling today, but I prefer roads free of snow banks, even when melting (prone to icing in the shade). Today is a foretaste of spring to come, and bike rides to enjoy. Meanwhile, kudos to the town of Concord, MA for surveying non-residents as well as residents on pedestrian and cyclist access and safety.

Some time VC and frequent cyclist, hence Venture Cyclist. Big data (very) geek humor. Hat tip to Paul Bleicher, love this very geeky take – from 2009 – but just as relevant to today. Some time VC and frequent cyclist, hence Venture Cyclist. Big Data and the Internet of Things. I recently wrote about the amazing amount of data being produced by people. On the internet or mobile web. For example, every minute, YouTube gets 48 hours of video uploads, and nearly a quarter of a billion emails are sent… yes that’s what people do. However, that pales in comparison to the amount of data that will soon be generated by. A petabyte is about a billion megabytes. That’s big data. When we used to ...
