Book Worm's Head : Marek Hłasko - The Eighth Day of the Week (Ósmy dzień tygodnia)
http://bookwormshead.blogspot.com/2014/09/marek-hasko-eighth-day-of-week-osmy.html
Marek Hłasko - The Eighth Day of the Week (Ósmy dzień tygodnia). After a long chase that went on through three countries and two languages, I finally managed to get a (second hand) copy of The Eighth Day of the Week. Upon reading this novella, I'm happy to say that the chase was worth for Hłasko's book is a good catch indeed. I wouldn't have annoyed you with all these details had The Eighth Day of the Week. Grzegorz, Agnieszka's brother, will become your favourite pessimistic alcoholic philosopher in tow...

Book Worm's Head : Chil Rajchman - Treblinka
http://bookwormshead.blogspot.com/2014/02/chil-rajchman-treblinka-survivors-memory.html
Chil Rajchman - Treblinka. Jean Amery, Tadeusz Borowski, Imre Kertesz, Primo Levi, Boris Pahor, Elie Wiesel…. However, it must be stressed out that whereas Nemirovsky's unfinished Suite Française. Was a work of fiction (even though deeply interconnected with history in its making), Rajchman's writings deal with the darkest reality human beings could find themselves in. And yet, if I wanted to pull myself together to go and see the horrors of Treblinka, I would find no barbed wires, no iron gates, no turr...

Book Worm's Head : A.M. Bakalar - Madame Mephisto
http://bookwormshead.blogspot.com/2014/12/am-bakalar-madame-mephisto.html
Am Bakalar - Madame Mephisto. I confess I had a lot of fun while reading this novel which is a fantastic page turner indeed. I guess that living in Poland right now and having dealt with always smiling but often treacherous HR personnel in the UK for some years played a significant part in my enjoyment, though. Well done to am Bakalar for having taken such a good snapshot of both aspects, then. But wait a moment. Did she? Well, yes and no. You see, the author there was trying her best to stress out the d...

Book Worm's Head : George Grossmith - The Diary of a Nobody
http://bookwormshead.blogspot.com/2014/01/george-grossmith-diary-of-nobody.html
George Grossmith - The Diary of a Nobody. It is with the uttermost pleasure that I read through the diary of Mr Charles Pooter of Holloway, London. Mark my words, this gentleman was certainly not a Nobody. I am aware that the excellent Mrs Pooter and the author's own son, Mr Lupin Pooter, didn't value the diary much. Nonetheless, it is my strong belief that they are both mistaken in this respect. By the by, shall we forget to mention Mr Pooter's uproarius word jokes? No, we shall better not. For Mr Charl...

Book Worm's Head : Victor Sebestyen - Twelve Days: The Story of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution
http://bookwormshead.blogspot.com/2014/05/victor-sebestyen-twelve-days-story-of.html
Victor Sebestyen - Twelve Days: The Story of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. This was an excellent, engaging and quite informative read which happened just when I needed it. I've been interested in the 1956 Hungarian Uprising/Revolution for quite a long time, but - by sheer coincidence - one week upon finishing Twelve Days. I finally visited Budapest for the very first time. And blame on you, Victor Sebestyen. For reading Twelve Days. Despite of the title he chose, the author doesn't rush to the brave and...

Book Worm's Head : Anna Swir - Talking to My Body
http://bookwormshead.blogspot.com/2014/04/anna-swir-talking-to-my-body.html
Anna Swir - Talking to My Body. I've never been a great fan of poetry, but - growing older - I began to reconsider my reader's block towards poems. Thus, I bought a couple of poetry books, found myself interested in the biography of Eugenio Montale and even went to a contemporary poetry reading (although with mixed feelings for what I heard). I didn't know the author, but eventually got rather fond of this collection of nice little poems; for they helped me out with my Polish vocabulary and understanding.

Book Worm's Head : Stefan Grabiński - The Dark Domain
http://bookwormshead.blogspot.com/2014/04/stefan-grabinski-dark-domain.html
Stefan Grabiński - The Dark Domain. I'd like to be indulgent with Stefan Grabiński . For he deserves that. For writing the sort of fiction he delivered in his time and place wasn't easy at all, as you will read soon. The eleven short stories you can find in The Dark Domain. Are only a tiny fraction of what Grabiński published in his native Poland including five novels and five works for theatre. A go and I bet you'll understand what I mean. Have a gothic flavour ( A Tale of the Gravedigger, Fumes). Imbib...
