M2E System Dependencies Manifest Class-path. Recently I had to use a system scoped dependency in my pom. Some of my code used classes packaged in the jars pulled in through system dependency’s manifest Class-Path entry. To my surprise my M2E enabled Eclipse project was showing import cannot be resolved errors while compilation using command line mvn went smoothly. Some digging revealed the root cause and the solution. Hence the discrepancy in behaviour.

Connection closed: chasing a phantom. Recently one of the new applications that has not made it to production yet started suffering from java.sql.SQLException: Connection closed exception. Worse yet was the persistent nature of the error. Once it started occurring it was reappearing until the container restart. It was time to try something new. Idea of deployable jms and jdbc modules that can be bundled in an application that needs them simplifies relationships between app developers and those who end up deploying them. No chance of forgetting to create datasources, queues, etc. No need to check whether they already exist and if they are created the way developer expected them to. Nevertheless, I don’t see this feature being used much or at least not too many people care to admit to it. Otherwise, where are all those examples to save time?

Testing ldap authentication with production users. It is never easy to remove components that have been in production for a while. This obvious fact was further reinforced when I was switching authentication from security product that cannot be named to a simple LDAP or AD more specifically. AD to application group mappings was the only function performed by that product, but there was quite a few - thousands to be exact. How would one verify that all mappings get converted and noone looses access?
