Somewhere in this picture is a car. What a difference two days makes. After four days of deep blue skies, thick fog yesterday turned into snow clouds by evening. The flakes fell feebly at first, then during the night winter returned with gusto. At least 50cm fell at village level last night. And it has started again. Weight on both skis, qu...

Newer posts →. March 7, 2013 · 4:41 pm. 7/3/13 – Engadine Marathon: three days to go. A nice flat bit of marathon course near Samedan. In three days’ time I’ll attempt to cover 42km on cross-country skis in the Engadine Marathon. There’s no reason why I shouldn’t succeed; after all, 11,000 people do so each year, some of them less fit and less confident on flippy little langlauf skis than me. PJ going smoothly up a hill during practice, 4km from the finish of the Engadine Marathon. Feb 27 – 1hr yoga.

One of the many avalanches in Val d’Isere this week. Note the single point of release at the top. Never have I seen so many enormous avalanches all over the place as this week in Val d’Isere. Many have widened to more than a hundred yards and travelled half a mile. Many must be at least 100 feet deep. A couple of days ago a ...

After months of bloglessness it’s time to start posting again, as I’m back doing something worth writing about ski-wise. (I haven’t been idle since my last post by the way: I have got married, left my job and been settling into a new house/district 300 miles from my old home.). On the powder highway with two sunroofs.

The Adventures of Dr. Duvel. Tuesday, February 26, 2013. Crunch Time : Exam Week (Week 6). Week 6 is Crunch Time : Assessment for the CSIA (Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance) Level 1 Qualification. I'll cut to the chase, I got it, but it was a tight one. I am a very happy puppy, but much work and more flex and bending to be done in the coming weeks! Reminds me of another one of Jono's lines : "Skiings an activity right? You've gotta be active". Jeez! Mountains in Motion: The Canadian Rockies. Strange tha...

4/2/14 – On camera at Kicking Horse. March 29, 2014 · 8:28 am. 10/2/14 – Kicking Horse versus Revelstoke. The view from Revelstoke ski area, down to the Columbia river. I’ve spent four days at one (see previous post. And two at the other. And those days were spent skiing in supposedly unimpressive conditions rather than the fresh powder people travel half-way round the world for. But I have a few observations about the resorts of Kicking Horse. A morning blast at Kicking Horse. There’s a difference...

A minimum of a fortnight's ban from Fernie is the penalty for crossing this rope. When I completed the Ski Club of GB leaders’ course in December (see previous posts) and was offered Fernie, British Columbia, as my first three-week leading slot, I suspected I’d landed on my feet. Wow! Sighed fellow leaders. Lucky you! 19/2/1...

Fabulous spring skiing in Ischgl two years ago. This year, those brown patches are white. To round off this snow-blessed winter in the Alps and escape the persistent winter chill of home, if you have a few days and a few pounds to spare I suggest you go skiing. From last season about where to join off-piste groups. And here is page 2.
