The Retrogrouch: June 2015
http://bikeretrogrouch.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 29, 2015. Saddlewax Vintage Saddle Archive. The Retrogrouch has limited internet access for the next few days - so blog updates will be likewise limited. But if you checked in for something new today, I don't want to leave you totally frustrated. So I have here. A link to a website I recently found that turned out to be a pretty good resource for vintage bicycle enthusiasts. The Saddlewax Bicycle Saddle Archive. On the site. Check it out if you get a chance. Friday, June 26, 2015. Unsuited f...
The Retrogrouch: April 2015
http://bikeretrogrouch.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Thursday, April 30, 2015. Who Needs a Power Meter? Who needs a power meter? Do, of course. Or at least, that's what some people would like you to think. You can't pick up a bicycle magazine, or click on a bike industry cheerleading blog without reading about the latest power meter that's "guaranteed" to take your cycling up to a "new level." If you aren't measuring your watts you're just pedaling around, and what's the point of that? Crank based, pedal mounted, or hub-based - power meters come. The short...
The Retrogrouch: The Great Boffo
http://bikeretrogrouch.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-great-boffo.html
Monday, August 3, 2015. The man is more important than the machine." That is the message young readers and future retrogrouches should take from Frank Dickens's classic children's story The Great Boffo. Which has just been re-released by the Pursuit imprint of Snowbooks. First published in 1973, The Great Boffo. With its historic link to the Tour de France. The boy stared and stared. On such a machine. One could hardly be beaten. "It is not surprising. That Boffo wins all his races," he said to himself.
The Retrogrouch: What Is The Masi Legacy?
http://bikeretrogrouch.blogspot.com/2015/08/what-is-masi-legacy.html
Wednesday, August 5, 2015. What Is The Masi Legacy? Few bike names evoke more passion than Masi. The Italian master Faliero Masi was one of the preferred builders of many great racers, including Eddy Merckx, Fausto Coppi, and Jacques Anquetil (regardless of whose name appeared on the bicycles themselves), and the name is loaded with that "mystique" that makes bike fanatics drool like Pavlov's dogs. Yeah, the current Masi logo bears. The name "Milano," but has as much. Connection to that Italian city as.
The Retrogrouch: Throwback Thursday - On a Friday: Vintage Schwinn Ads
http://bikeretrogrouch.blogspot.com/2015/07/throwback-thursday-on-friday-vintage.html
Friday, July 31, 2015. Throwback Thursday - On a Friday: Vintage Schwinn Ads. I've always had sort of a soft spot for Schwinns. I know a lot of Retrogrouch fans do, too. My first really nice bike was a Super Le Tour, and while I would go on to own nicer bikes over the years, that one really helped me catch the bug. One thing unique about Schwinn was that they always had a strong commitment to adult cycling - long before it became popular during the Bike Boom of the early '70s. Here's an old one - 1963, I...

seeming verb: trip to roy's with the old guys
http://seemingverb.blogspot.com/2015/08/trip-to-roys-with-old-guys.html
Quo debeo agere satis sum. For what I have to do, I am enough. Monday, August 10, 2015. Trip to roy's with the old guys. Well, for the past few weeks I've been doing the lion's share of my job searching on Mondays, but tomorrow, the weather is iffy, and the Old Guys go out of Etra on Mondays. so I decided to blow off job search this morning (actually, I did some in the afternoon), and I went to Etra to ride with Al and Dennis. We stopped at the new Roy's. Then back. It didn't feel. Hill Slug Chronicles; ...
seeming verb: won't work
http://seemingverb.blogspot.com/2015/08/wont-work.html
Quo debeo agere satis sum. For what I have to do, I am enough. Tuesday, August 4, 2015. The original is here. You could MAYBE do it if the lawnmower were directly under the fork, and you could turn the whole front-end assembly. But better would be to have the wheels of the lawnmower turn like a car's wheels. At this point, though, the whole business is developing some serious weight (and probably expense). How about dragging the lawnmower behind the bike? Someone could probably get that to work. Wednesda...

Biking the Good Life. Wednesday, July 25. Pinarello. Steel. Cyclocross. I'm loving my new bike. I picked up this classic downtube shifting Pinarello cyclocross frame a few months ago from Aubrey at his shop Refried Cycles. A great shop deserving of a post all it's own). When I got the frame it was a sad sight indeed; sprayed (maybe brushed? Even though I know spray paint chips much more readily than a professional paint, I did my best to do the paint job by the book. Multiple clear coats were applied...

Biking the Good Life. Thursday, June 7. Bike Camping: It Happened. I finally got her to join me on a little impromptu bike camping trip. It's great to live in a city where you can ride fourteen miles and camp in relative solitude away from the hustle and bustle. With full cell reception. Hawk Camp is a great little campground nestled in Gerbode Valley in the Marin Headlands. You get occasional views of the tip tops of Sutro Tower and the Golden Gate. Oh yeah, and that is. StuBeContinued: Marin Cross
http://www.stubecontinued.com/2012/08/marin-cross.html
Biking the Good Life. Saturday, August 11. More from the Miwok/Bobcat/Old Springs/Marincello continuum, also known as Gerbode and Tennessee Valleys. Riding the cross bike is totally different than my usual rigid SS Monocog flight, the uphills are great, but the downhills get sketchy rather soon. There is only so much a mediocre 32c 'cross tire can handle before a pinch flat or a wipeout. Old Springs Trail got especially hairy during the stair section. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
biciak: Glenn Eames' Old Spokes Home in Burlington, Vermont
http://biciak.blogspot.com/2014/06/glenn-eames-old-spokes-home-in.html
Friday, June 13, 2014. Glenn Eames' Old Spokes Home in Burlington, Vermont. After 14 years, he opened his own shop and named it the "Old Spokes Home.". He sold used bikes at first and fit right in supplying the fixie crowd until the interest peaked. He grew and sold new bikes, too. And Glenn can prove it. The pre-1900s bikes are organized to illustrate the evolution of bicycle design and innovation in the bicycle's first 40 years. Direct-drive, chain-drive, shaft-drive, wooden spokes, steel-spoked and ad...

Friday, December 28, 2012. Cycling in a Group. Cycling with other folks is often a rewarding experience. Learning the skills of riding in a pack can result in thrillingly fast rides, racing tactics, breakaways and. a long ride home by yourself. Lake Pepin three-speed ride brew-up. Riding with a group of people who love the same things as you is fun. http://biciak.blogspot.com/2014/08/pugsley-to-9zero7-upgrade-part-2-vee.html
Friday, August 22, 2014. Pugsley to 9Zero7 upgrade part 2: Vee Rubber Snowshoe XL 4.8 arrives! The build is almost complete. The Vee Rubber Snowshoe XL 4.8 arrived yesterday and it is a very different beast than it's predecessor the Snowshoe 4.7. Unlike the Snowshoe 4.7, which was more like a real 4.0, the Snowshoe XL 4.8 is every bit a wide high volume tire. The tread is much more aggressive. Snowshoe XL 4.8 on left and Snowshoe 4.7 on right. Time to hit the trail! August 23, 2014 at 3:09 PM. 2012 Cirqu...

Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Chris Boardman on Helmets and Safety. Read Boardman's full statement "Why I didn't wear a helmet on BBC". On the British Cycling website. The helmet flap has been brought back into the news because Boardman is about to release a bicycle safety film - aimed not at cyclists, but at the drivers of cars. The short film, called Space. Grinnal/Triumph Rocket 3 Trike. Britt Butt Rally 2011. After last year’s breakdown (my propshaft decided to divorce my bike at 1:30am in the Lakes) I was really looking forward to this years rally.
